Castila Language School About the

  • Castila is located in a carmen in the Albaicín, a garden house in the oldest and quaintest neighbourhood in Granada, in full view of the Alhambra Palace. The Alhambra is the most visited monument in the world. Founed in 1988, Castila is a learner focused organization that is dedicated to the teaching and immersion of the Spanish language and culture. There is a balanced combination of classes, extracurricular and cultural activities for the students to participate in to ensure the authentic practice of the Spanish language while also having fun! There are 46 designed activities that have been developing and envolving since 1988. Castila also offers small class sizes with a maximum of 6 students per group. Which makes for an intimate and intense learning environment. The teachers are of the highest quality with atleast 5 years teaching experience. They are also very dedicated to their students in and out the classroom. In addition accommodation of the highest quality is available in Granada with the option of homestay with family, a single flat, or shared flat with other students. Castila also offers Spanish+Ski courses in the Sierra Nevada! Where the classroom conditions are the same, but you have the chance to enjoy a week of skiing and accomodation at a ski resort in the Sierra Nevada Moutains, just 30 kilometers from Granada. In other words, a thousand and one opportunities to practice Spanish and enjoy a fulfilling cultural experience. Which is why 40 % of the students extend the course or come back in the near future. As a student said in 1999, Castila is an intensive learning experience in and out of the classroom.

Course Information

  • Focus of Study :
Developed for students who are more ambitious and wish to take advantage of additional classes, and for those who have less time at their disposal.

    METHOD:
Castila wants to show students a language which, though full of contrasts, has brought millions of people together worldwide through centuries of history and  continues to do so to this day. To reach the specific objectives of each level, Castila offers optimal learning conditions, based on organization and method. This is a student-centered method, which considers the teacher as the facilitator and organiser of learning activities according to the students’ levels, needs and personalities. The starting point is a comprehensive planning of goals and contents according to the linguistic needs of the student, his/her competence level and the number of weeks he/she will stay at Castila. This planning is done based on a previous determination of initial level. Our method of a coordinated rotation of teachers gives the widest possible exposure to spoken Spanish. It means that every lesson is taught by a different teacher, carefully planned by the coordinator and academic manager. Courses are interactive and emphasis is placed on participation in the classroom.
Communicative, traditional and other modern activities in the classroom are selected depending on the specific characteristics of each student and his/her group.

    Curriculum :
The intensive spanish course offers year-round every Monday with 6 classes per day 8:35AM to 14:30PM. Castila’s extensive experience and consistent revision of contents has led to a new concept of levels, structured in hours of study. The following plan refers to the 102 (A) course, 30 hours per week. This course consists of 2 extra hours daily, allowing the student to practice, review and reinforce the acquired language skills up to that point, but without studying new content Every week of study contains appropriate formal and conversational contents according to the European Common Framework for Languages (ECFL) and material can be applied to the three levels of the Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera (DELE), as established by the Instituto Cervantes: initial, intermediate and superior. Apart from the above information, Castila also offers more practice and reviewing when the teaching staff considers it appropriate according to the students’ needs. Castila also proposes an objective test at the end of every level, so that we can evaluate the process and guarantee perfect timing. To achieve the C.2 level (mastery), Castila proposes specific topics courses, such as courses applied to professional purposes (medicine, law, diplomacy, commerce, business, teaching, etc.), Spanish and Latin American literature and society or any other course where the objective is communicating in Spanish like a native or developing a professional career in a Spanish-speaking country.

Location

Accommodation

  • 1. In a shared flat with other Castila students.
Weekly cleaning is provided and the building is located in the city centre. never further than 15 minutes’ walk from the school. Facilities are bed sheets, kitchen, fridge, washing machine, TV, and usually –but not guaranteed– with phone.

    2. In a shared flat with Spanish people.
For students of Castila who prefer to live in an absolutely Spanish environment, the school is able to offer the option of a room in a shared house with friends and/or acquaintances of the staff. This preference must be indicated in the application form Questionnaire. The price is the same as in a shared flat with Castila students. Limited availability.

    3. In Spanish families. Staying with one of the tried and trusted families.
Homestay houses are close to the school (maximum 20 minutes). Because of the nature of this type of accommodation and to maximise contact with the family, in this case the school kindly asks students to recommend full board to the student. This is so the family does not feel awkward eating meals when the student is at home but not eating with them.

    4. Individual apartment.
With one or two bedrooms, this is another high standard of accommodation, ideal for those students who prefer more privacy.

Surrounding Area

  • One of the strongest factors that makes Castila different is its location in a carmen* in the Albaicín of Granada: the distinction is made clear when you find yourself learning Spanish in one of the most unique neighbourhoods in the world (UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995), in a traditional, historical house of Granada with its own garden and views of the Alhambra. This priviledged location makes Castila a particularly special, distinctive choice. Granada, in south-east Andalusia, is 55 kms from the Costa Tropical, 30 kms from the southernmost ski resort in Europe, venue of the World Skiing Championships in 1996, and is also handy for many other can’t-miss visits on any tour of the south of Spain, such as the Alpujarras, the Cazorla Natural Park, Seville, Cordoba, Úbeda and Baeza.

Facilities

  • There are seven classes well equiped with TV, TDT, video, DVD, CDrom, and HiFi. Student rooms are equipped with Hifi, TV (40 channels), DVD, TDT, Internet and computer room. The school is a Wi-Fi area exclusive for Castila students. Library has1000 titles and also has an agreement with the municipal library in the Albaicín. There are 300 movies in Spanish and bilingual and 6,000 titles of Spanish music. Other didactic materials include books, video and audio from E/LE for all levels of Spanish. Students have access to the full breakfast service at the Cafeteria from Monday to Friday and Friday "tapas" for friends, students, teachers and staff. The school has a view of Alhambra Palace and Sierra Nevada and the rest of the Albaicín from the second floor and from the other rooms, garden and houses of the Albaicín. Students have access to private swimming pool during the summer.
