In 1989, responding to the growing demand for high quality Spanish language courses, the school began welcoming students to the first don Quijote school, in Salamanca. Since ounding, it has grown to 7 company-owned locations in Spain and Latin America and a network of more than 30 partner schools, largely through the recommendation of more than 150,000 satisfied students. At don Quijote, the watchwords are Quality, Innovation and Partnership. While the staff of don Quijote continue to lead - in academics, in value and in innovation - they continually seek out new ways to take the quality of their courses and their service to their students to the next level.

Course Information

  • Focus of study:
The Intensive Spanish course is undoubtedly the most popular class because it is designed to help students learn Spanish as quickly as possible through constant interaction. The classes are given entirely in Spanish in all levels, from beginning to advanced, so that students are divided according to their skill levels.

    Benefit, goal of this course:
Intensive Spanish courses are taught using an interactive teaching method which means that, whenever possible, professors will use practical situations requiring student interaction and communication. This communicative teaching method has been constantly refined over the years and is now an integral part of don Quijote’s success.

    Curriculum:
Intensive Spanish classes focus on all aspects of the Spanish language and theory, from grammar exercises to reading, writing, listening and communication skills. Students may practice Spanish through a wide variety of activities including debates, newspaper articles, current affairs, games, mock telephone conversations, interviews, films and documentaries, listening to songs and, of course, real life situations and events.
Additionally, all Intensive courses in don Quijote schools in Spain include a complimentary cultural class every day that covers a topic of cultural interest. That means that students can choose to take an additional +5 Spanish classes a week absolutely free with don Quijote.

    Class hours:
20 lessons are held per week, plus 5 cultural classes every week.

Location

Accommodation

  • Homestay
Home stays offer students a unique opportunity to experience Spanish life while living in the home of a local Spanish speaking family. Students will speak Spanish all day long, out of necessity and fun and interest in the family life they see unfolding around them. Accommodation in a host family allows them to get the most out of their language course as it gives them a privileged view of daily life in another culture. Students can choose from a room with breakfast, half-board (breakfast and either a cooked meal in the afternoon at about two o'clock or light dinner at ten) or full-board (breakfast and two meals). Students will eat at local hours - usually later than what they may be accustomed to- and students will eat local foods, although the family will take their preferences into account as much as possible. Students will be given their own house keys, so they can come and go as they please. Students will also be able to receive phone calls at the family home.

Apartments in Spain and Mexico for don Quijote Students
Students can choose to share a student apartment with four or five don Quijote students. In a student apartment students will prepare their own meals and interact with don Quijote students of all ages and backgrounds. It is recommended that students make a pact about speaking Spanish in the apartment; other shared languages often take students away from Spanish language practice. Although the student apartments are not very luxurious, they include all the basic facilities: a bed, table or desk, chair and a closet wardrobe. Each student apartment has a living room with TV, a fully equipped kitchen, a washing machine and an iron. No telephones are available in student flats; we suggest you use public telephones or local calling centers. Students share the kitchen and the bathroom and, together, keep the house clean.

    Spanish Student Residences
If looking for an inviting and well-equipped stay just a quick walk from your classroom, the student residences may be the ideal accommodation. The Spanish student residences have a youthful, international feel and offer students all they will need in one building: laundry facilities, TV, prepared meals or shared do-it-yourself kitchens, and areas for studying and socializing. All of the student residences offer individual, shared and triple rooms, shared TV, shared living/dining rooms and washing machines. Bed linens are provided; it is suggested that students bring their own towels, for maximum comfort.

Surrounding Area

  • The don Quijote Spanish language school in Tenerife is located on the Edificio Belgica, a traditional Canarian-style building just 5 minutes walking distance from the Martiánez Beach, 2 minutes from the famous "Lagos Martiánez" and 10 minutes from City Hall in Puerto de la Cruz. Puerto de la Cruz, the second most popular tourist city in Tenerife, has the capacity to accommodate 30,000 visitors in hotels. In contrast to the large resorts in southern Tenerife, Puerto de la Cruz is known for being a great place to relax.  This reputation was solidified towards the end of the last century when the famous Spa Hotel Casino Tauro was built. Although Puerto de la Cruz is a small town that lacks many big city advantages, it offers various international attractions, excellent restaurants, cafés and many other facilities that contribute to its modern atmosphere. In fact, both national and international congresses and conventions are often held here. Tenerife Island has excellent air and sea communications, especially with the Spanish Peninsula. There are many daily flights to Tenerife from Madrid and it is also very well communicated with Barcelona, Bilbao, Malaga and Seville. Access to the other islands of the archipelago is also simple from Tenerife, with both frequent filghts and ferry services between the Canary islands. The lushness of the gardens and the agreeable atmosphere provide for a pleasant and lively city to stroll through.  In the evening, the streets near the Plaza del Charco and the promenade are great places to dine in any of the many open air restaurants, taking advantage of Tenerife's nice year round climate and fresh sea air. The city houses a number of buildings of great historical and artistic value such as the church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña, la Ermita de San Telmo, el Castillo de San Felipe, la casa de la Aduana and the old quay where small fishing boats are still moored. One of the greatest attractions of Puerto de la Cruz is without doubt the Lago Martianez, a series of seawater pools.  The project was conceived by Canary artist Cesar Manrique and forms an extraordinary spot for sun bathing while taking in the architecture and exotic vegetation of the volcanic coast. In addition to Lago Martianez, Puerto de la Cruz boasts many small beaches with volcanic sand such as Playa Jardin and Playa Martianez. Located on the outskirts of the city, the botanical gardens and Loro Park are a must-see for any nature lover. The botanical gardens, founded in 1788, harbor an enormous number of trees and plants from every corner of the planet, all preserved by the benign Tenerife climate. Loro Park is another tropical garden with the largest collection of parrots in the world, a great parrot show and an excellent dolphinarium.

Facilities

  • Students have access to 7 well-lit classrooms, a teachers' lounge, a patio, office, multimedia classrooms, and a recreation area with television, hi-fi, library and videos.
