Course Information

  • Focus of Study :
    EAP (English for Academic Purposes) is a fast-growing specialisation in the world of English language teaching and learning, primarily aimed at the increasing numbers of international students seeking to study at English-speaking institutes of higher education.

    Benefit, Goal of this course :
    -raise the linguistic and communicative competence of the international students to the level required for commencement of their undergraduate or postgraduate studies;
    -equip students with the essential study skills and knowledge needed to become critically aware of their own learning through the medium of English, allowing them to fully ---engage in higher education studies and assessment procedures in their chosen subject areas
    -We strive to consistently provide the most relevant, effective and enjoyable EAP teaching and learning experience for our students, whether their future field of study at the university lies at undergraduate or postgraduate level. In doing so, we -make use of research-informed practice and underpinning adult education theory, in addition to the wide classroom experience of our dedicated, subject-specialist teaching staff.

    Curriculum :
    The 10-week programme is aimed at international students who need to improve their overall IELTS band score by 0.5 in order to be able to accept their offered degree programmes at Maynooth. Undergraduate students need to improve from 5.5 to 6.0 while postgraduate students must improve from 6.0 to 6.5. The 5-week programme is for students who have already attained the required overall band score and who wish to practise and improve individual skills in English, especially writing. As such, the 5-week programme contains a heavy emphasis on academic writing skills, in particular the various types of essay organisational structure and sentence/paragraph composition.

    Rye Hall is a 20 apartment complex on the North Campus arranged in three halls, in a mixture of three and four bedrooms.
