The private Ernst-Kalkuhl-Gymnasium (EKG) is a high school with a day boarding school in Bonn - Oberkassel. In 1880, Ernst Kalkuhl (1849–1918), who came from Remscheid, decided, after he had gained experience in private schools as a teacher in England and France, to set up his own school for boys in Oberkassel near Bonn, the then “Institut Kalkuhl”, which then received state recognition in 1891. Ernst Kalkuhl's son-in-law, Franz Heel from Nuremberg, took over the management of the school in 1916 and, after Ernst Kalkuhl's death, the school board in 1918. He kept it until his death in 1957. In the Weimar Republic, in 1924, the then upper secondary school was given the right to give the Abitur in-house with full state recognition. Finally, in 1951, the school was given the same status as all public high schools in the country with the designation “state-recognized high school”. The son of Franz Heel and Alma Heel (née Kalkuhl), Karl-Ferdinand Heel, took over the school management from his father in 1957. As director of studies, he ran the boarding school. Since the school had now grown to over 600 students - co-education in school and boarding school was introduced in 1972 - it was decided to hand over the management of the high school to selected senior study directors. After Karl-Ferdinand Heel's death in 2001, his sons Ernst-Martin Heel and Franz Christoph Heel took over the management of the school in a civil law company, with director of studies Ernst-Martin Heel, who also runs the boarding school, acting in a managing role.
Focus of Study : The Ernst-Kalkuhl-Gymnasium is a three-class school. 681 students currently attend our school. They are taught by 29 male and 21 male teachers. Our half-day classes are attended by 29 students each. From the 2018/2019 school year, our fifth graders will again be taught according to G9, the older students will continue to be taught according to G8.
Benefit, Goal of this course : Since the boarding school is increasingly being attended by foreign students from different nations, especially in the upper secondary level, we see it as our special task to promote intercultural education and integration in schools and boarding schools through a network of targeted didactic measures and additional teaching offerings ( DAF courses etc.). A member of the teaching staff is responsible for coordinating these tasks as a special area of activity. It remains the boarding school's responsibility to respond to the needs of our foreign classmates in all areas of life. Weekend care and contact with parents are fundamental elements of our educational work. Basically, the educational and professional work of the boarding school is based on the core values of our school. We strive to increase each student's interest and skills through personal attention to each individual student in order to enable them to have a successful and happy time at school here with us.

Language sequence in secondary school I (grades 5-9):
English (from grade 5), Latin or French (from grade 7). From grade 9 onwards, Spanish is an elective subject.
If you don't choose a third foreign language, you can attend bilingual computer science, science or history classes.

The boarding school has been inextricably linked to the school since the Ernst-Kalkuhl-Gymnasium was founded in 1880 and its function assumes a special educational mission. In grades 5c to 9c, students from the day and full boarding schools are taught together. The small number of students in each class enables efficient school support and special personal attention to the young people entrusted to us. In order to realize this requirement, the boarding school teachers are also members of the respective class team, consisting of class teachers and subject teachers. The task of boarding school educators also includes being in constant contact with the teachers and parents of their students in order to be able to respond appropriately to upcoming tasks and problems. They therefore take part in all conferences and events in their class. The daily silent session forms the core of our boarding school activities in grades 5 to 9. Here, professional support takes place that goes beyond the scope of simply doing homework and is the focus of parents' interests. A diverse daily leisure program, which results from the planning of the boarding school teachers, the courses and working groups of the logo club and the sports activities (rowing in the club, sailing, tennis), forms an indispensable counterweight to everyday school life. The upper level concept of our boarding school in grades 10 to 12 has a unique selling point compared to other boarding schools in terms of the professional support of our students. Our goal is to teach students an efficient and constant working attitude and at the same time to provide high-quality academic support in all subject areas through complex and very differentiated subject silences. The general upper level silence therefore takes place in central upper level rooms, while the school teachers and the boarding school educators, who teach the respective subject content, discuss subject-related problems with students in special work rooms and develop important contextual connections.

Sports competitions
Every year, the Ernst-Kalkuhl-Gymnasium takes part in the “Youth Trains for Olympia” school sports competitions. Teams in various sports are registered.

In grades 5 and 6, students can take part in the “Table Tennis Milk Cup Tournament” in class teams. This TT circuit tournament is played up to the national championship.
In grades 5 and 6, students can take part in class teams in the “SWB-Tabu-Kicker-Cup”, which is organized every year by the Tabu-Gymnasium.
Student rowing club
From grade 6.2 onwards, students have the opportunity to join the student rowing club (SRV). The SRV offers several rowing trips every year and also offers the opportunity to row on the Rhine every week.
