University of ManchesterAbout the
We offer courses in English language and 19 other languages for personal, professional and academic purposes at various levels to prospective and current students and staff of the University and to members of the wider public. Our Full-time English Language courses are accredited by the British Council, through Accreditation UK. Our Pre-sessional courses are also accredited by BALEAP - the Global Forum for EAP Professionals. We are an examination centre for IELTS, Cambridge, Pitman, Goethe-Institut, Paris Chamber of Commerce and Madrid Chamber of Commerce and can prepare you for these examinations. We are also responsible for the multimedia language learning facilities which serve all of our students and, indeed, all the students of the School of Arts Languages and Cultures' degree programmes.
Our English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Pre-sessional course lasts for between 1 and 4 terms (10 – 40 weeks), and will provide you with the necessary academic English language proficiency to progress on to a degree level course. The length of course you take will depend on your current level of English.
The course offers a combination of academic English language classes along with an introduction to academic study skills to help prepare you for further study in the UK. The morning "core skills" classes will focus on the four language skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking in an academic context, along with grammar, vocabulary and study skills. In the afternoon, you will study different classes based on your level; for example:
Extensive reading and listening skills
Grammar for writing
Culture & communication
Reading for writing & speaking
Listening for reading & speaking
These classes are not optional and form part of your EAPP course.
Your timetable will depend on whether the course is being taught completely online, or a combination of online and on-campus teaching (the content is exactly the same for both modes of delivery). Usually, you will study for 21 hours per week, which includes 14 hours of "core skills" live learning lessons in classes of up to 16 students (either online or on-campus). You will also have 2 hours of live afternoon classes each week focussing on academic skills / culture and communication, plus integrated learning tasks to complete, which we recommend you spend at least 1 hour per day on. In your core skills classes, you will also have individual or small group tutorials with your tutor every week.
