The International Education Department offers a comprehensive, full-time program in English language studies on the Castlegar campus. Courses in grammar, writing, reading, and oral communication are offered over six levels at a fundamenta, intermediate, advanced and university & college prepation level. Students who wish to improve their language skills for personal communication, for further academic studies, or for a future career opportunites will benefit from this program. Short-term English language, cultural and recreational programs ranging from 2-8 weeks are also available for individuals or groups. These programs can be customized to each group and combine conversational or academic English with cultural and recreational activities, Canadian student and family life, and sightseeing opportunities.

Selkirk College strives to deliver a broad range of high quality learning opportunities in a caring and supportive manner. Selkirk College offers a variety of certificate, career, and diploma programs, as well as university transfer and associate degree programs. Selkirk College is located in the West Kootenay region of the province of British Columbia, about halfway between Vancouver and Calgary. The West Kootenay region enjoys a moderate four season climate and is famous for its natural beauty. The natural environment of forests, mountains, lakes, and rivers provides many opportunities for recreation and adventure. Selkirk College houses excellent programs in the discipline of Business, Engineering Technology, Creative Arts, Health Sciences, Information Technology, Building Design and Construction Technology, Manufacturing Technology and Skilled Trades, and Community Studies.
The objective of the English Language Program is to provide students with the language skills to communicate effectively in an English-speaking environment, as well as to succeed in college and university courses and improve future employment opportunities. Certificates are offered upon successful completion of different levels of the program.
Curriculum :

The English Language Program includes instruction in all English skill areas at fundamental, intermediate, and advanced stages. Students at all levels have a choice of oral communication seminars as well as additional elective courses. Advanced students may choose courses with either a communicative, business or an academic focus. The full English Language Program consists of an average of 22 hours of classes per week, depending on level and course selection.
Students who complete the Advanced English Language program and wish to continue their study of English language can enroll in the University & College Preparation Program. In addition to courses in College Preparation and Advanced English, students can take 1-3 university courses offered in other college programs. Enrolment in such courses must be approved by Selkirk International Department Head and program school chair. Acceptance will depend on the student’s English language ability, performance in pervious classes, skill level in the subject area, the prerequisite requirements of the course(s) desired, and the availability of space in each course. Successful completion of the Advanced level of the English Language Program and English 51 with a grade of “C” or better is required for entry to most university transfer and college programs.

For direct admission, applicant must be from an English speaking country or meet either of the following English test scores:

Min IELTS overall: 6 (Min Reading: 5.5, Min Writing: 5.5, Min Listening: 5.5, Min Speaking: 5.5)
Min Duolingo English Test Score: 105
NOTE: Applicants interested in applying for direct admission, but are yet to complete an acceptable language test, can do so, but must provide valid results before receiving a final offer letter.
For conditional admission, instead of submitting language proficiency test scores, applicant may complete English courses prior to the academic program. The length of the English course is determined based on the applicant's level of English proficiency.

HOMESTAY - the best choice for new students Staying with a Canadian family offers the best opportunity to speak English and learn about Canadian family life and culture. All homestay accommodations include a private room, 3 meals per day, and laundry facilities. A minimum of 4 months (1 semester) is recommended.
DORMITORY/RESIDENCE - a good choice for independent students with good language skills Kekuli House Residence, conveniently located on the Castlegar campus, is home to students from Canada and around the world. It provides private rooms with a shared bathroom, cooking facilities, and a common room with TV and pool table.

In and out of the classroom, Selkirk College provides clean, modern campus facilities to its students. Well-lit, computerequipped classrooms, a library, cafeteria, bookshop and a full range of recreation facilities are accessible to all students. Indoor facilities include: Weight room, Racquetball Court, 12, 000 square foot gymnasium, Bouldering Cave. The Cage, located on the ground floor of the Castlegar Gymnasium provides a variety of equipment on loan (heart rate monitors, frisbees, footballs, and ping pong supplies) and also offers a locker and towel service.
Outside of the campus walls, you will find a spacious soccer field, an outdoor volleyball court, and three tennis courts. In addition,many kilometres of scenic cross-country trails are available for walking, jogging, and mountain biking. Just one word of caution for trail users: please watch for wildlife! It is not uncommon to find bears, deer, and other critters enjoying our trails too. Recreation facilities include: • gymnasium • weight room • squash & racquetball courts • indoor climbing wall • outdoor fields • tennis courts
Activity
In the summer, enjoy renowned trails, mountain and rock climbing routes, provincial park camp grounds, local golf courses, fishing, stand-up paddleboarding and some genuinely rad river kayaking. Community parks provide great spaces for picnics, sandy beaches, slacklining and boarding. In the winter, take an avalanche skills training course and explore the backcountry on some powder skiis (you'll need those to conquer the forty feet (average) of snow fall. Enjoy ice skating, snowshoeing, sledding, cross country ski trails and the general winter wonderland that is yours to take in. The mountains are close, the lakes and rivers even closer. This is some of the best terrain British Columbia has to offer.
