Getting to the school from the airport, 3D School view
Kaplan transfers Students should fly to San Francisco International Airport (SFO) located about 30 minutes from San Francisco.
If you have paid for the Transfer Service, a Greeter holding a Kaplan sign with your name on it will meet you. For international flights: please look for a sign labeled "Meeting Point" outside the Customs Hall exit. For domestic flights: please meet your greeter in the baggage claim area.
You should look carefully for the greeter in both of these locations. If you do not see the greeter, you should go to the Information Desk and say “Page Roger with OEC”, and the greeter will come to find you.
If there are any problems, you should call the transfer service at 1-888-863-2482. This is a free call and can be made from any public phone with no cost. You can also call Kaplan San Francisco's 24 hour phone number : 415 905 4350. You should be prepared to tell them your name, location, and the problem you have encountered.

이번 주에는 학교생활 및 학교 수업 선택 노하우와 다양한 교외 액티비티에 대해 말해보고 싶다. 우선, 나는 정말 열악한 홈스테이를 하고 있었는데, 학교 측의 Housing 담당 선생님과 상담을 한 결과 즉각적으로 이사를 할 수 있게 되었다. 한 달만 어학연수를 하는 거라서 이사를 하는 것이 불가능하다고 생각하고 있었는데 즉각적이고 융통성 있는 조치가 감사했다. 새로 이사하게 된 홈스테이는 학교와 정말 가까웠고 주거지 환경도 비교할 수 없을 만큼 깨끗하고 다양한 상권이 입지해 있었다. 무엇보다 하우스 분위기가 전혀 새로운 신세계였다. 매일 아침 저녁 시간은 맛있는 음식과 함께 하우스 메이트들과 홈스테이 아주머니, 아주머니의 딸과의 대화의 장이었고, 수많은 대화를 하는 중에 영어 실력은 물론이고 많이 친해질 수 있었다. 홈스테이를 하면서 미국문화를 느낄 수 있게 된 것 같아서 굉장히 기쁘다. 타지에 와서 어학연수를 하다 보면 새로운 환경에 나도 모르게 위축되어 소극적으로 변할 수가 있는데, 그러지 말고 불편한 부분이 있다면 학교 관계자들에게 적극적으로 건의를 해서 더 나은 쪽으로 바꾸어 나가는 자세가 필요한 것 같다. 큰돈, 소중한 시간을 들여서 온 만큼 할까 말까 하면 해보는 것이 덜 후회가 남는 것 같다.
그 다음은 수업 선택이다. 처음에 들어오면 레벨 테스트를 하게 되고 그것에 따른 반에 들어가게 된다. 6개 정도의 레벨로 나뉘어 있다. 그런데 문제는.. 이곳에서 다양한 학생들과 대화해본 결과 레벨보다는 선생님과 클래스메이트가 더 중요한 것 같다. 오랫동안 학원에서 생활한 분들 이야기를 들어보면 레벨마다 가르치는 내용은 많이 달라지진 않지만 같은 반 학생들의 수준과 선생님과 나와의 코드가 얼마나 잘 맞느냐가 학습 효율에 더 많은 영향을 준다는 말을 했다. 그것에 동의한다. 나도 처음에는 레벨이 내가 기대했던 것보다 낮게 나와서 의문이 있었는데, 생활하다 보니 선생님과 급우들이 너무 좋아서 그냥 그대로 지내고 있다. 그렇지만 시간이 지날수록 참 많이 배우고 있다는 생각이 든다. 물론 수업 내용 자체는 문법과 독해, 듣기에 강한 한국 학생들에게는 굉장히 쉽다. 하지만 그것을 가르치는 과정에서의 설명과 표현들, 그리고 학생들끼리의 수업 중 액티비티에서 배우는 것들이 참 많다. 나 같은 경우는 한 달만 있기 때문에 레벨 테스트를 다시 치를 생각이 없지만, 오래 있을 학생들 같은 경우에는 욕심을 내어서 레벨 테스트를 보는 것도 추천한다. 담당 선생님께 잘 말씀 드리면 원래 10주나 8주에 한 번씩 레벨 테스트를 볼 수 있지만 더 일찍 보는 경우도 있다고 한다. 물론 여기서는 앞에서 말한 것처럼 자신에게 적합한 레벨, 선생님, 급우 모든 것을 고려해서 반과 레벨 선택을 하는 것이 좋을 것 같다. 방금까지 말한 것은 main 수업 이야기이고, elective 수업도 있다. 이건 자신이 부족한 부분을 보완할 수 있도록 다양한 수업들이 개설되어 있는데, 주변 친구들 조언과 자신의 부족한 부분, 필요한 부분을 잘 고려해서 여러 수업을 다 들어보는 것을 추천한다. 그러다가 가장 자기와 맞는 수업을 듣는 것이 좋을 것 같다.
