The English Language Center at Drexel University is a progressive intensive English program which offers a state-of-the-art education to international students seeking to improve their academic language proficiency. In addition, instructors in ELC program will be aware of and take into consideration individual personality and learning style differences as well as other affective factors
Benefit, Goal of this course : Core courses (15 hours per week, morning or afternoon) include Listening/Speaking classes that focus on listening competence, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar, and enable students to develop their communication skills and abilities. Reading/Writing classes help students improve their reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammatical structure and mechanics, mastery of paragraph and essay format, idea development, and writing process. Special Topics (3 hours per week; 1 1/2 hours Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thursday)-Special Topic classes concentrate on specific skills or test preparation, depending on your level. Examples include Vocabulary Development, Oral Presentations, English for Everyday Life, Advanced Grammatical Analysis, IELTS or TOEFL Preparation.
Curriculum : The curriculum is based on a communicative approach to language teaching / learning, and our courses are learner-centered rather than teacher-centered. The ELC's Intensive English Program is composed of 6 levels of proficiency, from beginning to advanced. Students who successfully finish each term move one level each term. Core classes held 15 hours per week, either morning or afternoon, consist of Listening/ Speaking and Reading and Writing. There are also Special Topics classes held 3 hours per week. There are maximum of 18 students per class.

Students can practice their English and learn about American culture in comfortable private rooms, with self-serve continental breakfast each morning, and 3 family-style dinners each week. Housings are located in residential neighborhoods convenient to the ELC (15-30 minutes). Students will be given free linens and bedding, wireless internet access, access to microwave and refrigerator, and laundry facilities. Additional air conditioning fee ($30 per month) from May through September may be charged. Payments for the term are made directly to students' host family at the start of each new term.

As one of the oldest cities in the United States, Philly was the first capital of the U.S.; home of the Liberty Bell and the Declaration of Independence. The vibrant atmosphere full of music, theaters, museums, restaurants and clubs, shopping centers, sports teams and recreational facilities never keeps the Philly mundane. Home to over 50 colleges and universities and a major center for the healthcare and pharmaceutical industries, Philadelphia offers academic stimulating envirnment for college students. Philly is also about 2 hours by car, train, or bus from New York City and Washington, DC, and only a short drive from New Jersey beaches and casinos, as well as Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains and Amish country.Enjoying all four seasons, Philadelphia’s weather is fairly moderate. Spring and fall have warm days and cool nights with some rain, and winters can be cold, with one or two major snowstorms. Philadelphia summers are usually hazy, hot, and humid.
