English Language ProgramAbout the

The ELP is an intensive language program at Kansas State University that strives to provide English instruction to students who are admitted to a degree program but have not demonstrated the English proficiency required for enrollment in academic courses. The ELP also offers English instruction to international students and professionals who to come to focus on language training or as a study abroad experience. The ELP began as a year-round program in the fall of 1986 with 38 students under the direction of Enid Cocke. Since the 1990s, the program has been housed administratively under the Office of International Programs with courses offered through the College of Arts and Sciences. In 2010, annual ELP enrollment had grown to more than 400 students. The English Language Program is located in Fairchild Hall on K-State's Manhattan campus.

Kansas State University (KSU, Kansas State, or K-State) is a public land-grant research university with its main campus in Manhattan, Kansas. It was opened as the state's land-grant college in 1863 and was the first public institution of higher learning in the state of Kansas. It had a record high enrollment of 24,766 students for the Fall 2014 semester. The university is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity". Kansas State's academic offerings are administered through nine colleges, including the College of Veterinary Medicine and the College of Technology and Aviation in Salina. Graduate degrees offered include 65 master's degree programs and 45 doctoral degrees. Branch campuses are in Salina and Olathe. The Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology Campus is home to the College of Technology and Aviation. The Olathe Innovation Campus has a focus on graduate work in research bioenergy, animal health, plant science and food safety and security.

Curriculum :

Intensive English students have 18-19 hours of class every week. Students have orientation classes, opportunities for social activities and field trips through the International Student center, and free tutoring. ELP students are K-State students and can use and enjoy all of the university facilities.

K-State Fast students are admitted as undergraduate degree students. They may take anywhere from 4 - 19 hours of English. Those that qualify can take a combination of English and academic classes at the same time. Depending on the college, students can use anywhere from 6 - 27 credits toward a bachelor's degree. The ELP advising staff help students to move into their academic major.

Students in the Graduate Pathway program take 3 or 6 hours of English per week along with 3-6 hours of classes in their graduate major. The Pathway Program allows students to begin graduate work with English scores below the admission requirement. The Pathway Program is one semester long. Upon successfully completing the Pathway Program, the student has full admission to their graduate program.

The Certificate of Proficiency in English for Academic Purposes is a way that degree and non-degree students can provide evidence of their English abilities to employers and professional contacts. Students who meet the admission requirements can complete the work for the certificate on campus or online. The certificate is an official undergraduate certificate from Kansas State University.

Students can take English as degree seeking or non-degree students on campus or online through Global Campus.

Getting to the school from the airport

Airports

MHK - Manhattan Regional Airport

We strongly suggest flying into the Manhattan Regional Airport (MHK), located only minutes away from campus. We provide a free shuttle for arriving students from the airport to campus Wednesday through Friday of arrival week. It takes students to campus only. Please email international@k-state.edu if you are interested in this service.

MCI - Kansas City International Airport

The Kansas City International Airport is a much larger airport than the Manhattan Regional Airport. This option may offer greater flexibility and more arrival options. However, Kansas City is more than 200 km (130 mi) from campus and we do not have a pickup service available for students arriving at this airport. Transportation options from Kansas City to Manhattan will be expensive.

Getting to campus from the airport

Manhattan Regional Airport to Campus

- A free airport shuttle will be available from Manhattan Regional Airport (MHK) to K-State on-campus housing during arrival week.

- This shuttle is available to students arriving in August or January arrival week for the Fall or Spring semesters. The shuttle is not offered for Summer semester.

- Uber and Lyft operate in Manhattan, as well as several taxi services.

- Note: taxis are not automatically waiting at the Manhattan airport, so you would need to arrange the taxi pick-up.
