Conditional Admission
The students who are accepted for the Intensive English Program will be given a Conditional I-20. To attain full admission to the University of Tennessee at Martin, an undergraduate student must study intensive English until achieving a TOEFL score of 61/500 (ibt/paper-based test) or successfully completing all levels of TIEP, while a graduate student must achieve a TOEFL score of 71/525 and fulfill requirements such as the GMAT, etc. before taking regular university courses. To be admitted to the TIEP, a student is preferably a high-school or university graduate with a 'C' or above average or is with a family member attending TIEP or UT Martin, submitt documents of financial support and have valid travel documents. The Conditional I-20 is granted after the Office of International Programs receives a student's completed application (print application now) and then issues the Conditional I-20 which the student must then take to a U.S. Embassy or Consulate along with the necessary documents required to get a visa. Call the nearest U.S. Embassy for local requirements.

The Tennessee Intensive English Program, TIEP, is located in the quiet, peaceful city of Martin, Tennessee on the beautiful, award-winning campus of the University of Tennessee at Martin. We offer English courses for speakers of other languages, prepare students to enter the University, and conduct special contract programs.The average size of each ESL class is 12 students with a ratio of one full-time, professionally trained teacher for every 8 students. Thus, close and personal attention to each student is a key element in the success of the IEP and its students. There are more than 200 international students from more than 25 countries on the campus.Various courses Tennessee Intensive English Program include special activities that allow students to engage in deeper understanding and more frequent usage of English. The activities include enrichment courses that covers topic of global issues, current events, TOEFL prep, and vocabulary enhancement, American Conversation partner program for cross-cultural information share, advanced TOEFL and GMAT prep for students who want to study in undergraduate or graduate degree programs in the United States. Students will be met at the Memphis International Airport (MEM) and escorted to the University by a staff member if arriving on the date specified in the acceptance letter. Students are helped to settle into the dormitories as well. There are university dormitories on campus which are located within a five-minute walk to all ESL classrooms and all dining facilities. There are several local eating establishments within walking distance from the dormitories. The dormitories are equipped with laundry and recreation rooms. They have telephones, a common kitchenette, and full cable TV connections with computer Internet connections. Students with families and older students are eligible to live in university apartments which are also located a short walking distance from campus.

Martin is a typical American town with traditional American values where students can experience American culture first hand. It is a town where students can live and learn free from big city anxieties frustrations and indifference that can often overwhelm the new comer to the United States. Nearly everything in town is close to dormitories and university apartments. Classes, banking, shopping, restaurants, laundry, sports facilities, etc. are accessible on foot or bicycle.

The University maintains several state-of-the-art computer labs on campus. Complete Internet capabilities are accessible to all UTM and TIEP students as well as the latest computer facilities. Each dormitory room and university apartment are equipped with a connection offering more than 80 cable TV channels and a high-speed Internet connection for students with their own computers. This service is included at no extra charge in the cost of the residence. The library is fully automated and library information is available in the library, in the computer labs, and directly on student computers connected to the Internet. There are superb sports facilities on campus which include a large number of tennis courts, ball fields, jogging trails, an olympic-sized swimming pool, racquetball courts, basketball courts, a new recreation center, etc.
