Getting to the school from the airport, 3D School view
Kaplan transfers Kaplan can arrange a comfortable and stress-free transfer from any of the three area airports to anywhere in the city you’ll be staying - whether you’ve chosen Kaplan housing or not.
Most students choose to fly in to John F. Kennedy International airport (JFK), but we will also arrange transfers from Fiorello LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Newark International Airport (EWR). Your driver will greet you outside of the baggage claim area in the airport holding a Kaplan sign. All details of your transfer will be confirmed and your confirmation number will be provided to you after you have provided us with your flight details. We can also arrange a transfer back to the airport when you have to return home.
Independent transfers If you choose not to use the Kaplan transfer service, the famous New York “Yellow Taxis” are always available. In the airport, you can simply follow the signs pointing you in the direction of “Ground Transportation” to an outdoor waiting area where you’ll wait in line for the next available car. The cost for a taxi from JFK is a flat fee to anywhere in New York City, so don’t be alarmed if the driver doesn’t turn on the meter. From LaGuardia and Newark airports, however, the driver should use the meter.
A shuttle and bus service is also available at each airport and specific information about these services is available at the Ground Transportation waiting area
1) HIGHER INTERMEDIATE LEVEL CLASS에서 수업을 들으며얻는 이점Higher Intermediate Level클래스 친구들은 대체적으로 영어로 프리토킹은가능하지만 문법이나 고급적 어휘가 조금 부족한 느낌이었는데, 제가 딱 문법이나 고급어휘 파트에 약한 상태였어서 사전에 진행한 Level Test가 매우 정확하게 저를 판단한점을 알게 되었어요!실제로 중상급반 수업을 들으면서 매일 기본적인 문법이 아닌 상당히 고급 단계의 문법그리고 복잡한 시제들을 전체적으로 다뤘기에 평소 에세이나 작문을 할 때 겪었던어려움에 대한 문제를 파악하고 문법적 오류를 알게 되면서 문법적 오류를 줄일 수 있게되었습니다.또한 제일 좋았던 점은, 수업 첫날부터 다양한 액티비티를 통해 다른 학생들과 친해질 수있다는 점이였어요. 저희 반엔 프랑스, 이탈리아, 콜롬비아 등 정말 다양한 국적을 가진학생들이 어학연수를 하러 뉴욕 카플란 센터에 왔더라구요. 다양한 국적을 가진 친구들과수업을 들으면서 좋았던 점은 수업 주제가 매일 달라지는데 매번 다양한 주제의 어휘들과문법적인 요소 그리고 그 문화적 배경을 배우는 동시 그 나라들의 문화들을 선생님이돌아가면서 물어보시면서 확인하시는 부분이 너무 재밌더라구요. 물론 한국인인저희한테도 항상 물어보시면 영어로 저희 생각과 한국의 문화적 배경을 설명하면서프리토킹 연습을 할 수 있는 동시에 많은 친구들 앞에서 반복적으로 자신의 생각을영어로 발표하다보니 영어로 말하는 자신감도 더 상승하더라구요.흥미로웠던 점이 한가지 더 있는데 바로 그룹 액티비티였어요. 매일 랜덤으로 그룹을지어서 친구들과 함께 책에 나온 지문들을 읽고 문제의 해답을 찾거나 또는 영어로그날의 주제에 대해 논의를 하는 시간이 주어지곤 했는데 이때 특히 서로에 대해알아가는 시간을 가져서 친구들과 친해지는 동시에 영어로 말하기 연습이 되니깐 자극이되는 동시에 영어 프리토킹에 두려움이 사라졌어요.
2) GENERAL COURSE 수업은 정확히 어떤 수업인가요?
영어로 프리토킹하는 연습을 그룹 액티비티를 통해 자주 하는 동시에 문법과 고급 어휘를 전반적으로 다양한 주제를 통해 배우는 수업이였어요. 교재로 수업을 하고 있지만, 매일 책에 나와있는 주제 외에 다양한 문화적 배경들을 영어로 듣고 서로 말하고 경청하는 시간이 많기 때문에 특히 영어 스피킹 실력이 향상되는 것은 당연하고 다양한 국가의 배경에 대한 지식을 영어적 표현과 어휘들로 통해 얻을 수 있는 시간이였어요.
3) 외국에서 생활하고 공부하면서 경험하는 힘든 점은 어떤 것일까요?
뉴욕은 여름에 매우 더워요. 제가 3년전에 갔었을 때보다는 조금 시원해서 이번에 조금 놀랐는데 제 몸 자체가 여름엔 매우 더워하고 겨울에는 손발이 매우 찬 그런 몸이에요. 아무래도 몸 체온과 달리 밖은 덥고 숙소나 수업을 들을 때는 에어컨을 틀곤 하는데 밖에서 놀고 또 수업도 듣고 그러다가 또 다시 레스토랑이나 내부 활동을 할 때엔 대부분
에어컨을 쎄게 틀어놓는데 이번엔 냉방병이 걸려서 한동안 고생을 했어요. 아무래도 3 년전 너무 더웠던 기억 때문에 대부분 옷을 얇게 입고 다녔는데, 이게 몸을 더 차게 만들어서 탈이 났던 것 같아요. 그러니 꼭 여름이라고 나시나 반팔만 가져오지 마시고 얇은 스웨터 또는 가디건을 꼭 가지고 다니시는 걸 추천합니다.
4) 카플란 뉴욕 센터에서 참여한 소셜 액티비티 중 가장 기억에 남는 액티비티가 있으세요?
소셜 액티비티 중 제일 기억에 남는 액티비티는 바로 오페라의 유령 뮤지컬이였어요. 뉴욕 브로드웨이 뮤지컬의 명성은 전부터 들어왔지만 이렇게 멋진 뮤지컬은 태어나서 처음이였어요. 학교에 친구들이랑 모여서 같이 걸어가기 때문에 카플란 뉴욕센터에서 브로드웨이까지 가는 동안 친구랑 수다를 떨면서 가서 일단 가는 동안 전혀 지루하지 않았어요. 동생이랑 저랑 같은 옆자리였는데 동생이 뮤지컬 1 부가 끝난 후 너무 감동을 받아 울었다고 하더라구요. 같이 갔던 다른 학생 친구도 너무 감동적인 경험이었다고 말했어요. 뮤지컬을 좋아하시는 분들은 꼭 친구들과 함께 참여하시는 걸 추천해드립니다
