The University of Alabama (UA) is a public coeducational university located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States. Founded in 1831, it is the flagship universityof the University of Alabama System, as well the senior and the largest in terms of enrollment among all of the universities in Alabama. It is known as The Capstone, a nickname that stems from a 1913 speech by then-president George H. Denny, who extolled the university as the "capstone of the public school system in the state". UA offers programs of study in 13 academic divisions leading to bachelor's, master's, Education Specialist, and doctoral degrees. The only publicly supported law school in the state is at UA. Other academic programs unavailable elsewhere in Alabama include doctoral programs in anthropology, library and information studies, metallurgical engineering, music, Romance languages, and social work. Focus of Study : Core classes, which meet for a total of 20 hours per week, are the foundation of the ELI program of study. “Required core classes” are offered each session at each level and consist of Reading/Writing, Speaking/Listening and Grammar.
Benefit, Goal of this course : -Culturally Speaking is a conversation class in which ELI students meet with US students for informal conversation, primarily about cultural topics. The class, which meets for 2 hours per week, is required for new students and optional for continuing students. -Each session, the ELI plans a variety of activities that allow students to visit areas in Alabama and in the southeastern United States, practice their English skills, and become better acquainted with their teachers and each other. Typical student activities include movies, concerts, shopping, recreational sports, and weekend trips to nearby locations–the beach, the mountains, and cities such as Atlanta, New Orleans, and Memphis. -When not in class, ELI students may use the ELI Study Center, where they can check out books, listen to audio materials, and watch videos, including popular movies. In addition, students can receive individual instruction and assistance from qualified tutors in the ELI Study Center
Curriculum : For those seriously interested in improving their English and academic skills and preparing for university study in a relatively short period of time, the ELI provides the services and benefits of the only intensive English language program in Tuscaloosa. This intensive program consists of up to 20 class hours per week of beginning-level through advanced-level instruction. Beginning and intermediate classes teach communicative skills and integrate listening, speaking and pronunciation in one module and reading, writing and grammar in a second, week-long module. Advanced classes continue to reinforce basic skills while emphasizing academic skills.

For core classes, students typically have RW (Reading/Writing) and SL (Speaking/Listening) classes in the morning and STR (Structure) classes in the early afternoon. Some core classes have alternate meeting times. ELEC (Elective) courses and CS (Culturally Speaking) courses take place before or after the core classes. Classes meet from 9 to 4:30, Monday to Friday. Class schedule may vary for each level.

Students at the English Language Institute may choose to live in University residence halls on the University of Alabama campus or in off-campus housing, such as private apartments. Living on campus in University residence halls is convenient because it gives ELI students excellent opportunities to interact with American students and to participate in campus activities. Students who are sure they wish to live on campus should request and submit a UA Residence Hall Application as soon as possible after applying for ELI admission.
Surrounding Area
The University of Alabama is located on a large, beautiful campus in Tuscaloosa, a friendly city of 90,000 people. Tuscaloosa is just one hour away by car, bus or train from Birmingham, the largest city in Alabama. Other nearby cities include Atlanta, Georgia (3 hours), Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee (4 hours), and New Orleans, Louisiana (4.5 hours). Gulf of Mexico beaches are also nearby (4.5 hours). The state of Alabama is located in the southeastern portion of the United States and is bordered by the states of Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida. Because of its location, Alabama enjoys a relatively warm climate most of the year. Summer is hot, winter is mild, and spring and fall are warm and filled with colorful flowers and trees.
