About the  International

  • UFV's ESL program provides high-quality, intensive English language instruction. Faculty use contemporary North American teaching methods and the latest in materials and technology in a computer and multimedia laboratory to ensure every opportunity for success. UFV is best known for its small class sizes and dedicated instructors. In smaller classes, you are more likely to get face time with your professors — both during class and office hours. Small classes allow you to participate in lively discussions, receive help, practice skills, ask questions, and be as successful as you can be at university. Courses emphasize writing, grammar, reading, vocabulary, speaking, and listening. Several electives are also available in business, TOEFL and pronunciation. You can earn certificates for successful completion of studies at intermediate, advanced, and academic levels. The English Second Language program (ESL) at UFV is an academic preparation program that combines in-depth training in core language skills at six levels with a choice of electives to suit the individual needs of students. All reading, vocabulary, writing/grammar, and speaking courses are considered "core". All other courses are "electives". Our electives include courses in pronunciation, phonics, TOEFL preparation, Business English, academic note-taking, and other skills. Students can attend part-time or full-time, in the daytime or the evening. Students in the ESL program gradually shift from an all ESL program into a combined ESL and academic program giving students practical support during this transition and helping them adjust to the increased study time required in academic studies. This approach also helps maximize student success in further academic or career programs by providing students with the opportunity to develop the skills required for post-secondary study at Canadian universities.

About the  University of the Fraser Valley

  • University of Fraser Valley is founded in 1974 as Fraser Valley College by the increasing demand for expansion of vocational training. In 1988, UFV became a university college and grew rapidly, becoming one of the largest university colleges in Canada. UFV is fully accredited public university with provincial accreditation with the Ministry of Advanced Education, British Columbia (AVED) and national membership in the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC). UFV also has the province of British Columbia’s Education Quality Assurance (EQA) trademark, recognized worldwide for providing quality post-secondary education. In addition UFV has consistently been ranked as one of the top universities in the Globe and Mail's Canadian University Report. In fact, we consistently receive more “A”s than any other public university in British Columbia, and score highest in student-faculty interaction, student satisfaction and quality of teaching. In any given year, UFV has approximately 900 international students, who come from over 40 different countries around the world to study and live in one of the most culturally diverse cities in Canada. UFV is located in the city of Abbotsford in the heart of the Fraser Valley in south-western British Columbia, Canada. UFV is less than an hour drive east of the coastal city of Vancouver, and minutes from the United States border. Hallmarks of the region include a temperate climate, beautiful scenery, a wide range of outdoor activities, and many local shopping centres, restaurants, and recreational facilities.

Conditional admission

  • Certificates of completion are available for students throughout the program starting at our upper intermediate level. Students taking advanced level ESL classes have the option of applying to the Foundations Program. Students in Foundations may take a limited number of academic classes each term along with their ESL classes as long as they continue to meet the program requisites. Students who graduate from our highest ESL level meet the requirements of UFV’s English Language Entrance Policy and may begin full time studies in UFV academic programs (providing they have met program prerequisites).
