About the  English Language Institute

  • The UBC English Language Institute (UBC ELI) opened in 1969, and welcomes thousands of international students through its doors every year. As a UBC ELI student, you learn from ESL instructors who are leaders in the field of language education. You also have access to many of the outstanding resources that UBC offers. The UBC ELI building is located at the centre of the UBC campus, and features bright and comfortable classrooms and a Student Study Centre (SSC). The Student Study Centre includes multimedia labs with free Internet and email access. We can arrange your accommodation in a campus dormitory during the summer months or in Homestay (living with a local Canadian family) year round.You will be surrounded by other students with interests and ambitions that match your own – students who are as independent, adventurous and creative as you are. You will practice conversation every day, and enjoy social activities led by Canadian students. The UBC ELI English-only policy helps you learn more quickly and successfully. About the  University of British Columbia (UBC)

  • The University of British Columbia, commonly referred as UBC, is a public research univeristy with campuses and facilities in British Columbia, Canada. UBC was founded in 1908 as the McGill University College of British Columbia, the university became independent and adopted its current name in 1915. It is the oldest institution of higher learning in British Columbia and enrolls over 57,000 students as its Vancouver and Okanagan Valley campuses. UBC's 993 acre Vancouver Campus is located within the University of Endowment Lands, about 10km from Downtown Vancouver. The 516 acre Kelowna campus, acquired in 2005, is located in the Okanagan Valley.
    UBC is consistently included among the top three research universities in Canada, and among the top research universities in the world. As of the 2013-2014 school year, UBC was ranked second in Canada among national reserach universities, and consistently ranked among the top 50 global universities. Conditional admission

Course information

  • Focus of Study :
    The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is a 16 week integrated skills program for upper-intermediate to advanced students beginning in January, May and August/September.

    Benefit, Goal of this course :
     The English for Academic Purposes program has three levels, ranging from upper intermediate to advanced. Placement tests at the beginning of the session will determine your level and eligibility for the EAP. Each day, students attend 2 blocks of Academic Reading & Writing and 1 block of Academic Speaking and Listening. The two classes are thematically linked, and instructors work closely together to provide opportunities to work on assignments and projects which integrate all skills. You are encouraged to attend optional Friday workshops and can join in the socio-cultural activities organized by UBC Cultural Assistants (CAs) throughout the semester. 

    Curriculum : 
    Each day, students attend 2 blocks of Academic Reading & Writing and 1 block of Academic Speaking and Listening. The two classes are thematically linked, and instructors work closely together to provide opportunities to work on assignments and projects which integrate all skills.

    Classroom Hour : 
    The English for Academic Purposes gives you full-time English language training in 16 week terms starting in January, May and September. EAP students will be in class from Monday-Thursday, either from 08:30-15:40, 08:30-14:40 or 10:20-17:30 with one break during the day. On Fridays, students attend optional workshops from 10:20-12:00 and/or 13:00-14:40

Accommodation

  • Residence life provides a safe, diverse, and well-maintained environment that complements and supports the academic mission of the University. UBC creates a dynamic living and learning experience that promotes and inspires individuals to become empowered community members. There are number of options for first year students or upper classmen. Students can choose to live in a dorm or homestay.

Surrounding Area

  • The Vancouver campus is located at Point Grey, a twenty minute drive from downtown Vancouver. It is near several beaches and has North Shore mountains. The 7.63Km Pacific Spirit Regional Park serves as a green belt between the campus and the city. Buildings on the Vancouver campus currently occupy 1,091,997m gross, located on 1.7Km of maintained land. The campus street plan is mostly in a grid of malls (for driving and pedestrian only). Lower Mall and West Mall are in the southwestern part of the peninsula, with Main, East, and Wesbrook Malls northeast of them. The campus is home to numerous gardens. The UBC Botanical Gardenand Centre for Plan Research, the first UBC department, holds a collection of over 8000 different kinds of plants used for research, conservation and education.

Facilities

  • The heart of student activity at UBC Vancouver is the centrally located Student Union Building, which houses offices of many clubs, half a dozen restaurants and cafes, a pit a nightclub, the inexpensive 425 seat Norman Bouchard Memorial Theatre, several shops and post office. The majority of the outlets and shops in the SUB are run by AMS, however the addition of major corporate outlets in recent years by UBC Food Services has generated some controversy. The SUB Art Gallery contains mostly students' work. The UBC Bookstore has two locations on the Vancouver campus, the main store at 6200 University Boulevard, and one at the Sauder School of Business. There are also stores at the Okanagan and Robson Squre campuses. The Bookstore provides a range of products and services.

Activity

  • Vancouver has numerous popular parks all around, especially Stanley Park is one of the most beautiful park in Vancouver to enjoy sunshine. Also Whistler worldwide ski resort to enjoy Winter sports.

Getting to the school from the airport

  • When you arrive in Vancouver, a UBC ELI representative will meet you at the Vancouver International Airport (YVR), and will help you get to where you are going. Airport Welcome Service operates from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm Vancouver time on the two days before the start day of each program.
    This service is available to all students enrolled in the UBC ELI programs.Airport Welcome Service fee*: $50 CAD / person (includes transportation to your destination). All flight information must be given to the ELI a minimum of two weeks before arrival.

在學校上課時我也喜歡與同學互動。西方社會的上課方式和東方社會有很大的差別,在加拿大,老師喜歡同學上課多發言討論,提出自己的看法,即使看法不同,老師也會鼓勵並尊重不同的意見。另外,老師也喜歡同學分組討論,在上課中發表,這樣可以培養學生自己主動思考及團體合作的能力。一般在台灣,老師通常是只授課,學生回家複習並準備考試,無形之中減少了不少學習的樂趣。而在課堂上有不懂的地方,下課時也可找老師討論,加拿大的老師都非常樂意在下課時間讓同學來問問題,上課若有不懂的地方可於下課時間找老師發問。

要融入當地生活,免不了一定要用英文溝通,所以我建議多與當地同學互動,交朋友,多參加社區活動、校內社團或旅行等,都有幫助。像每年的滑雪旅行是我最期待的活動,不只可以去多倫多著名的雪場滑雪,也可以更加增進同學們之間的感情。另外,如果是住在寄宿家庭,也可與家庭成員多練習英語對話。我那時會每天固定用完晚餐之後跟寄宿家庭的爸爸媽媽聊天一小時,時間久了英文就會慢慢進步。對於不懂的地方我也會隨時問人,加拿大人都非常友善,也非常樂於回答問題。
