St. Michaels University School (SMUS) About the

  • St. Michaels University School (abbreviated SMU or SMUS) is a private day and boarding school in the municipality of Saanich, which is a suburb of Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Previous headmasters include Robert Snowden (2017), David Penaluna (1988–94) and John Shaffter (1977–88).

St. Michaels University School is a great place to be a student. That’s because we believe passionately that the most important lessons — both intellectual and personal — enable our students to discover who they are as individuals as well as who they have the potential to become. We also recognize that the path to excellence will be different for each of us, which is why we are highly adaptable in our approach to education.

Course information

  • Focus of Study :
    From Grade 6 to 8

Benefit, Goal of this course :
Middle School is an important time in the lives of children. It’s the age when they start to depend on their parents less; they become more independent and friends become more influential. They gain an increasing sense of self, of strengths and weaknesses, and of their place in society. The Middle School is designed to assist students as they go through this transition. In partnership with our parent community, SMUS recognizes the pressures on adolescents. We have created a school that nurtures our students and supports them in becoming accomplished, confident and empathetic young adults. You will find more about the Middle School program and the life of the school in the web site.

Location

Accommodation

  • SMUS boarders live in bright, furnished rooms that are shared between two roommates (you and one student). You don’t have to share an overpopulated dorm and there are no bunk-beds. We are serious about your privacy, so your room also has a private bathroom – that means no communal showers and no large dormitory bathrooms at SMUS – which is uncommon for a boarding school.

There are 21 rooms in each boarding house. Boys and girls live in separate houses but get to share a common room where you’ll find TVs, games, computers, a kitchen and lots of great friends to socialize with.

    What’s in each room?

As a boarding student at SMUS you will have:

Your own room keyAn extra-long single bed (no bunk-beds at SMUS)A bedside table with lockable drawerA desk with lockable drawerA chairWall-mounted bookshelves and storageA wardrobe for your clothesA bulletin board

Each boarding room at SMUS has:

A private bathroom (with a sink, shower, toilet and mirror)High-speed internet connection and WiFiA telephone connectionA thermostat to control the temperature of your roomA large window (with blinds) for natural light

Facilities

  • On campus, students can play squash, soccer, rugby, basketball or use the fitness centre to use the elliptical trainer and weights.

    Richmond Campus Facilities
    - Two gyms (single, double)
    - Fitness centre
    - Four squash courts
    - Four athletic fields

Activity

  • Our SMUS Leadership Program is designed to provide opportunities for all students to develop their leadership skills through active engagement in our community. This web page summarizes many of these opportunities. Our hope is that all Middle School students will consider ways in which they can develop their leadership skills and be involved in activities over the year. Additional opportunities will be announced during the school year, and we are always eager to discuss ideas students have to develop their own leadership activity.

Top Native Language by Center

  • Students from 52 different countries.

Getting to the school from the airport

  • SMUS runs a bus service to pick up and drop off boarders from the ferry terminal. Students can also arrange a shuttle bus to the airport through YYJ Airport Shuttle.
