Glenlyon Norfolk School (GNS) About the

  • At GNS, we recognize that finding the school that is the best 'fit' for your child (and your family) will be an interesting, exciting, and, sometimes, overwhelming experience. You may have discovered that there is much that independent schools have in common—academic challenge enhanced athletics and fine arts opportunities, small class sizes, and nurturing environments. Yet all schools are different and it is the uncovering of what is distinct about each school that can be the challenge.

Founded in 1913, Glenlyon Norfolk School is a co-ed independent university prep day school for students from Junior Kindergarten to Graded 12. We are the only school in Victoria and on Vancouver Island that is both an International Baccalaureate World Continuum School and a member school of the Round Square. The former means that GNS teachers and staff have embraced an internationally recognized 'gold' standard of education. Our membership in the Round Square is an articulation of ideals that include internationalism, democracy, environmental stewardship, outdoor activity, leadership and service.

Course information

  • Focus of Study :
    From Kindergarten to grade 5

Benefit, Goal of this course :
As an IB World Continuum School, we focus on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. The PYP is an enriched, highly rigorous programme that meets every student where they are and challenges them to do their very best. It reflects well the school’s mission statement: “To challenge and support our students to do their best through truth and courage in learning and in life.” Educating the whole student, the PYP encourages the development of body, mind and spirit in every student.

The IB Primary Years Programme at GNS provides a framework for the delivery and enrichment of the BC provincial curricula. In addition to meeting the province’s learning requirements, the IB PYP encourages a positive attitude to learning by engaging students in meaningful, in-depth inquiries. Students develop an awareness of the process of learning so that they become life-long learners, going beyond traditional subjects into real issues, emphasized through the attributes of the Learner Profile.

At the Junior School, sustained inquiry forms the centre piece of the curriculum. We use structured inquiry into both established bodies of knowledge and complex problems. With this approach, prior knowledge and experience establish the basis for new learning, and students’ curiosity provides the most effective provocation for learning that is engaging, relevant, challenging and significant. The nature of the entire program is transdisciplinary; a key concept is explored across numerous subjects through a variety of different lenses.

Course information

  • Focus of Study :
    From grade 6 to 8

Benefit, Goal of this course :
The IB Middle Years Programme at GNS is intended to help students aged 11 to 16 years develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills they need to participate actively and responsibly in a changing and increasingly interrelated world. It is designed to teach students to become independent learners who can recognize relationships between school subjects and the world outside. While the programme requires a thorough study of various disciplines, it focuses on their interrelatedness. Assessment of student work is carried out by teachers using criteria established by the International Baccalaureate; the IB does not set or mark Middle Years' examinations but provides external moderation to validate the school’s assessment standards. Authorized schools are visited and evaluated regularly.

Students advance into the Middle School at a crucial time in their transition to adolescence. Accordingly, our academic program recognizes that students of this age are in a period of flux; on their path to independence, they must cope with personal, social, physical, and intellectual changes.
