About the  Vancouver Community College

  • Vancouver Community College is a public community college in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Founded in 1965, it is the largest and oldest community college in British Columbia, offering 91 certificate programs, 31 diploma programs, and 3 bachelor's degree programs. VCC has two campuses: Broadway and Downtown. The college accommodates 26,000 students each year from a variety of nations, about 8 percent of whom are international students. Many of Vancouver Community College's programs require students to train in local businesses and facilities to gain practical skills. A number of these are located on campus, open to students and the general public. JJ's Dining Room at the downtown campus, is run by culinary arts students. The Four Corners restaurant and the Seiffert Market are run by VCC hospitality management students. The Broadway and Downtown campuses have several coffee and snack kiosks as well as full-service cafeterias. The VCC salon at the Downtown campus offers hairstyling and esthetics services from students learning in the Hair Design and esthetics programs.

    Communicate effectively in multiple contexts including personal, academic and workplace contexts of moderate complexity.
    Successfully engage in basic interactions, intercultural communication, and soft skills to function effectively in community, study and work contexts of moderate complexity.
    Utilize the following Essential Skills (thinking skills, working with others, computer use, and document use) for tasks of moderate complexity.
    Differentiate and produce a variety of genre types used in personal, academic and workplace contexts

    Benefit, Goal of this course :
    nstructors use multiple strategies to achieve the learning outcomes that include the following: ongoing needs analysis, group work, coaching, one-on-one consultations, using audio/computer labs, case studies, lectures, demonstrations, providing exemplars and texts, modeling, error analysis, peer review, role rehearsals, videos, and audio recordings.
    Specific learner strategies for speaking are: conversation management skills, pronunciation, error correction, and feedback.
    Specific learner strategies for reading are: reading for gist, skimming, scanning, speed reading, vocabulary acquisition, etc.
    Specific learner strategies for writing are: brainstorming, outlining, genre analysis, tone, register, etc. ESL Pathways is a rigorous and demanding program. Students should expect to do significant self-study and experiential learning in addition to classroom based learning. There will be approximately 1 hour of homework per two in-class hours.

    We encourage international students to experience life with a Canadian family until they become accustomed to their new surroundings. Homestay is a safe and secure choice, providing students with the opportunity to practice English outside the classroom and learn about the Canadian way of life. Liane's Vancouver Homestay places VCC international students with homestay families that provide the following:
    Private bedroom with a bed, bedding, dresser, desk, chair, desk lamp, closet
    Shared common areas of the house including bathroom, kitchen, and TV room
    Use of telephone and laundry facilitie
    Three meals per day (be sure to check with your Homestay family for exact meal times)

    Homestay Fees: January to July 2022
    Placement Fee: $380 + GST
    Short Notice Application Fee (submitted less than 2 weeks from the arrival date): $50 + GST
    Homestay Fee (for 8+ weeks): $924 per 28 days ($1064 effective August 2022)
    Homestay Payment Charge (first-month free): $9.50 + GST per payment
