About the  New Intensive Courses in English

  • Intnsive English education program at University of Hawaii Mano was founded almost 30 years ago, and it is one of the most renowned university ESL programs in the United States. The program specifically focuses on helping students to be capable of having fluent oral communications. The University boasts strong faculty body, and there are members who are still very active in the research fields and many professional organizations and boards. There are two different programs available for students taking ESL program: ELI, and HELP. Help focuses on Academic English preparation, whereas ELI mainly focuses on teaching general English to students who are non-native English speakers. Students have remarked “I have developed not only a base of knowledge but practical skills and experience.” Students can always pursue higher level of education whenever they are successfully accomplished one program due to the ESL departments broad course offerings.

  • University of Hawaii at Manoa is the main campus of the University of Hawaii public education system. Among the 10 universities included in the system, Manoa campus has the oldest and most renowned ESL programs. Students have diverse backgrounds, and come to the university to not only study but also to research and experience different culture. University itself has been ranked as one of the best colleges in the United States, and has been ranked in the top 30 public universities (research) for engineering, and science. There are two intensive English education programs called ELI and HELP. HELP is more appropriate for students who intend to pursue their studies in the United States after graduation. Both programs have been accredited by multiple colleges in the past.

Course Information

  • Focus of Study :
    Courses at University of Hawaii Manoa ESLprograms include basic communication course, reading& writing,listening& speaking, bilingual education, studies through education, andmore. Students will learn to fluently speak English and get accustomed toAmerican culture. 

    Benefit, Goal of this course :
    Curriculum at Manoa focuses on three different tracks 3: track A is academic, track B is Business, and track C is General Communication. Through these three different tracks, students will be prepared to fluently speak in English, and will be ready to study in the language more academically. More specifically, Track A helps students with specific goals for academic contexts. Track B helps students who seek to participate in professional fields. Track C is suitable for students who want to have successful living and social experience.

    Curriculum :
    Students will be placed in different classes; the classes are in 5 levels – basic, high basic, intermediate, and advanced. Generally, students will learn grammar (all tracks), Listening classes (A and B students combined for listening, and C with a different curriculum), Oral Production class that will be crucial to all levels and tracks, and integrated skills that will incorporate and expand speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. 
    Classroom Hour :
    NICE classes are offered throughout the day, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.
    TRACK A and B classes are usually held between 8:30 and 12:30. TRACK C classes are usually held from 12:30-4:30.

Accommodation

  • Students who will attend University of Hawaii Manoa for ESL program will mostly live in on-campus and off-campus dormitories, in private apartments, or with local families as a homestay. Private agencies arrange homestays for those students who want to intermingle with local culture and practice English on a daily basis. Students who are interested in being closer to classes and experience more curricular activities should join on-campus dormitories. Students must individually arrange their housing options, and the sooner the arrangements are, the better the chance of getting first choice option.



Surrounding Area

  • Manoa is a neighborhood with amazing views in Honolulu. Honolulu is the largest city in the United States, and is a state capital of Hawaii. Honolulu is already well-known for its beautiful beach and sceneries, but the city is also famous for its diverse population and international scholars. Next to Manoa, the island of Ohau is renowned for its natural beauty. Other tourist spots include Dianmond Head, Pearl Harbor, and a Volcano site. Students can also enjoy outdoors activities, shopping, and sightseeing and always enjoy nice sunny weather year around. The University of Hawaii Leisure Center offers international students opportunities to mingle with American students, and enjoy activities while practicing English.

Facilities

  • Facilities include multiple language classrooms, computer labs, and research labs. University of Hawaii also has Leisure Center where they can socialize with other international or local students and participate in outdoors or one-day activities at the same time.

  • ELS program at University of Hawaii at Manoa has international students with diverse backgrounds. Asian students includes students from Japan (50%), Korea (30%), and other (30%). Ther are also students from other parts of the world.
