About the  Intensive English Program (IEP)

  • HCC aims to provide students with outstanding academic English language with comprehensive support services to its international students. Students will be given opportunity to taste what it takes to study in American University.
    IEP provides thorough instructions in 4 major parts of English, which are writing, listening, speaking and grammar. Students will be trained to study in an American University. IEP program is specifically designed for beginner to intermediate non-native English speakers. (Students base below TOEFL 450)
     
    Upon the completion of IEP, students are expected to:
    1. Apply writing and critical thinking skills to personal and academic assignments.
    2. Apply appropriate skills to read, comprehend and respond to introductory-level academic and authentic texts.
    3. Apply listening and speaking skills to lectures, presentations, and in-class discussions.
    4. Understand grammar concepts and apply them to the other skill areas.

  • Focus of Study :
    IEPThe mission of the Intensive English Program at Hawai`i Community College is to provide academic English language instruction and comprehensive support services to international students seeking academic, personal, and professional goals in a rich, cross-cultural environment.
    The IEP offers 20 hours a week of academic English instruction in reading, writing, listening, speaking and grammar skills. Students are prepared with the skills that they need to study in  an American university. 

    Week 1
    First week of classes
    Meet your teachers and other IEP students

    Week 4
    Mid-term meeting with coordinatorIn the middle of the session, all IEP students can have a 10 to 15-minute meeting with the program coordinator. This provides students with the opportunity to discuss issues, concerns, and academic plans.

    Week 8 
    - Final Tests and GraduationAt the end of the session, instructors will meet individually with each student to provide information on student progress and final grades. Students also have an opportunity at this time to share information and opinions about the class.Final tests

    Hawai`i Community College, a campus of the nationally ranked University of Hawaii System, offers international students 22 Associate of Arts or Associate of Applied Science degrees in vocational arts, liberal arts, business, nursing, and forestry. In addition, Hawai`i CC is the only community college in the United States with a Hawaiian Lifestyles degree program with an option to transfer to a 4-year degree program in Hawaiian Studies. All degree programs give students chances for an internship to apply their learning to work experience, service learning, and Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation. Hawaii CC currently enrolls over 2000 students. It is a small college that offers personalized care for all of its students.
