About the  Center for International Education & Global Engagement

  • Otterbein’s story begins in the mid-1800s, before the abolition of slavery, before the women’s right movement, before equality and inclusion were rights. In 1847, equality and inclusion actually laid the foundation of Otterbein. The mission of Otterbein University is to educate the whole person in a context that fosters the development of humane values. Otterbein University is a private, church-related, coeducational college that sponsors traditional and continuing education programs of liberal arts and professional education at Baccalaureate and Graduate levels. Our commitment is to the liberal arts as the broad base of all learning. Otterbein University having inclusive, innovative and progressive history, present or future believes in giving back to the community, through service, cultural experiences and business partnerships. At Otterbein, an individual's worth has never been measured by gender, by color or by title.

About the  Otterbein University

  • Otterbein University is a private, four-year liberal arts college in Westerville, Ohio, United States. The university was founded in 1847 by the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. As a result of a division and two mergers involving the Church, the university has since 1968 been associated with the United Methodist Church. It features programs in engineering, business management, education, and music, as well as programs and pre-professional advising that prepare students for study in law and medicine. It has over 70 majors and over 40 minors. The university is named for United Brethren founder the Rev. Philip William Otterbein. In its 2012 edition of America's Best Colleges, Otterbein was ranked 16th in the "Regional Universities (Midwest)" category by U.S. News & World Report. In 2010, Otterbein College changed its name to Otterbein University to reflect the increasing array of graduate and undergraduate programs offered. It is notably an undergraduate institution(with 2700 students), and 400 graduate students on the campus. Students come from all 50 states and from more than 44 international countries. Otterbein has nearly 170 student organizations and a popular Greek presence. The school's mascot is Cardy the Cardinal and the school is a member of the Ohio Athletic Conference in Division III athletics.

Course Information

  • Focus of Study and Benefit :
The English as a Second Language (ESL) program at Otterbein University combines the language skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing while developing academic skills in research and note taking when focusing on a variety of relevant and interesting topics. Students are engaged in activities that require the use of a variety of skills and strategies that encourage authentic communication. This creates a dynamic, student-centered learning environment in which students acquire language in a natural and meaningful way.

    Curriculum :
The seven-week ESL session is an intensive program designed to immerse students in English language instruction four days per week (Monday through Thursday) for four hours per day. In the fall and spring sessions, ESL students meet for conversation practice with an American student 2 hours per week for a total of 126 contact hours per session. Students who successfully complete the Advanced Level of the ESL program can matriculate into Otterbein with the appropriate Institutional TOEFL (iTOEFL) score and instructors' recommendations. Students studying at the advanced level can concurrently take courses at Otterbein which are not language intensive (ex. math, art, etc.). At the end of each term, all students must take the iTOEFL exam, which is administered on the last day of class. The iTOEFL score, the instructor's recommendation and the course performance will determine a student's eligibility to proceed to the next course level in the ESL curriculum. Students who do not make satisfactory progress or who do not pass their current ESL level must retake the current level to increase proficiency before moving to the next level. Learning academic English is a process and level progression often takes two 7-week sessions. Because academic progress is important, students are only permitted to unsuccessfully take a level twice. Students who are unable to pass the exam after two unsuccessful attempts will be asked to leave the program.
    Classroom Hour :
4 hours per day, Monday to Thursday
