Course Information

  • Focus of Study :
    The English for Academic Purposes program is designed for ESL students with intermediate to advanced English proficiency who plan to enter an undergraduate or graduate program in an American college or university. All levels teach the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing), as well as grammar, vocabulary, and study skills, although the relative emphasis on each varies according to the level.
     
    Curriculum :
    Intensive English program for Academic Purposes is divided into 4 levels with strong emphasis on university preparation. An intermediate course with an emphasis on integrative skill development. Instruction in expository writing at the paragraph and short essay level and reading of simplified material. Includes study of all basic grammatical structures and basic listening/note-taking practice. Students prepare for the TOEFL. A transitional intermediate-advanced course with in-depth study of selected complex grammar structures. Reading of both simplified ESL and authentic academic material. Writing of expository compositions and a brief library research paper. Practice in advanced listening, conversation, and use of idioms. Students prepare for the TOEFL. Advanced integrated-skill courses with a focus on academic preparation, designed to help bridge students into college and university work. Emphasis on strengthening university research and study skills, and developing reading, writing, speaking, and listening proficiency through in-depth reading of authentic texts, writing formal essays, reports, and a documented paper, taking lecture notes, and participating in various formal and informal speaking tasks. Attention given to vocabulary expansion, advanced grammar in context, pronunciation, test preparation, and individual students' academic goals.

Course Information

  • Focus of Study :
    The English for Communication and Culture program is designed for individuals with intermediate to advanced proficiency who want to improve their English for personal and professional purposes. All levels emphasize listening and speaking, but also practice reading and writing for everyday use, as well as for professional situations. Course content will vary depending on group composition and interests.

    Benefit, Goal of this course :
    -Listening - Communicative activities, videos, guest speakers, presentations
    -Speaking - Discussions and presentations for social and professional situations, including telephoning, meetings, interviews, and other topics, as well as pronunciation
    -Reading and Vocabulary - General and intercultural topics, including professional practices in the U.S.
    -Writing - Correspondence for professional and personal situations, including emails, business letters, memos, resumes, and reports with an overview of word processing
    -Grammar - Systematic approach with emphasis on usage and application
    -Projects - Community-based research for reports, video projects, or professional projects
    -Field Trips - 3-5 field trips corresponding to class focus and interests
    -Homework - two to four hours per day
    Curriculum :
    Intensive English for Communication and Culture Overview has three different levels to fit students' needs. The intermediate course emphasizes integrative English language skills development, including a variety of communicative activities, discussions, dialogs, videos, simplified reading materials and writing tasks for personal and professional situations, as well as guest speakers and field trips related to course material. Levels 148 and 158 - Levels focus on comprehensive language skill refinement and complex grammar structures with immediate application in everyday life and professional contexts. The courses include use of authentic reading materials from cultural and professional situations, authentic writing tasks to enable students to function more effectively in social and professional situations, videos, guest speakers and field trips to integrate learning into the everyday world. Speaking tasks include practice in public speaking, presentations, and negotiations for professional and personal situations. The course content of level 158 varies from semester to semester, so level 158 may be taken more than once.
