About the  English Language Institute

  • CIES is an English language school for serious students who want to succeed at an American university. ELI's highly qualified instructors all have Master’s degrees in the field of Teaching English as a Second Language. In addition, the school limits the enrollment to 125 students per session so that instructors can give students personalized instruction in a safe, friendly environment. CIES is part of the FSU Graduate School and all of our offices and classrooms are in one location on the campus of Florida State University.Florida State College’s reputation is growing as the largest, most dynamic, and most influential higher education institution on the First Coast. The impact of FSU extends beyond student success and economic growth — to the arts and culture in our community. Through the Artist Series, honored by the State of Florida as a “Major Cultural Institution,” we bring top-rated Broadway productions, concerts, and cultural performances to Jacksonville each year.

About the  Florida State College at Jacksonville

  • Downtown Campus is just a few blocks from the Jacksonville Landing, the heart of urban Jacksonville. The campus, which opened in 1977, is located at 101 W. State St. between Main and Jefferson streets. At Downtown Campus, special emphasis is placed on college credit, continuing education and occupational skills training programs. The campus includes classrooms and laboratories for instruction in such programs as building trades, engineering technology, automotive technology, electrical and metal trades, and English as a second language. Downtown Campus reaches out to many different segments of the community through programs for widowed persons, senior adults, displaced homemakers and visually impaired adults. Major adult basic education, adult high school and Pathways High School Equivalency offerings are available too. The business and industry outreach program offers customized training programs on campus and in-house to local employers.

Conditional admission

  • Florida State College at Jacksonville offers conditional admission for students who successfully complete the Intensive English Language program and pass the college English proficiency exam. Admission will also be contingent upon receipt of official documents proving graduation from high school and providing proof of financial resources requirements

Course Information

  • Focus of Study and Benefits:
    Advanced Grammar
    This course is the third-level grammar course for non-native speakers of English. It includes the integration of major English tenses previously studied in Beginning Grammar and Intermediate Grammar and introduction of the remaining verb tenses and complex modals. It also includes the introduction to adjective, adverb, and noun clause structures and integration of core academic vocabulary into complex sentences.
    Advanced Reading
    This course is the third-level reading course for non-native speakers of English. It includes the further development of academic vocabulary, the mastery of and introduction to additional reading skills, development of the understanding of English clause structures and connectors encountered in academic types of reading, mastery of dictionary skills, and the development of reading fluency.
    Advanced Writing
    This is the third-level writing course for non-native speakers of English. The grammar introduced in Beginning Grammar, Intermediate Grammar, and Advanced Grammar is used in writing essays utilizing the principles of process writing, including pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing.
    Advanced Listening and Speaking
    This course is the third-level listening/speaking course for non-native speakers of English. It includes mastery of first, second, and third level grammar structures in aural/oral communication; continued development of accuracy and fluency in aural/oral skills — including pronunciation, intonation, correct grouping of vocabulary items in phrases; an introduction to academic vocabulary development; and an introduction to simple forms of gerunds and infinitives.
     
    Curriculum : 
    The English Language Institute (ELI) provides intensive, high-quality, non-credit instruction to non-native English Language speakers. The ELI is an academic unit of Florida State College and is located at Downtown Campus. ELI help students gain proficiency in English as a second language and a better understanding of American culture. As the central focus of our mission — consistent with the College's mission to provide meaningful learning, excellent teaching and quality service — students will be provided an intellectually stimulating and supportive environment that is flexible yet goal-oriented. The program is divided into two levels, with 10 to 15 students in each class. Students have to be age of 18 to apply to this program.

    four days a week, Monday–Thursday, from 9 a.m.–3 p.m.

    Florida State College does not offer on campus housing. Students can choose from a variety of options available in areas close to our Downtown Campus.
     
    Homestays
     
    Students can make arrangements for homestays by contacting International Housing Placement Service (IHPS). IHPS emphasizes providing safe, quality, and affordable living accommodations with hosts who are pre-screened, interested in cultural exchange, and are happy to open their homes to students.

Surrounding Area

  • Jacksonville is well-known for its beautiful beaches, such as Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, and Atlantic Beach to name a few. Students will enjoy what Jacksonville’s beautiful nature has to offer. Located on the banks of the St. Johns River, Jacksonville boasts its beauty throughout the year. With Florida’s mild year-round weather, students will find many different kinds of outdoor activities to enjoy such as golf, boating, fishing, and shopping. Many restaurants, performing arts, museums—such as the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville, the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens, and the Museum of Science and History—are easily available within a short distance from Florida State College’s downtown campus. Jacksonville also hosts many special cultural events annually. For instance, the Jacksonville Jazz Festival every April is the second largest jazz festival in the United States. Among many other entertainments the festival offers, it features the Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition, which has been a tradition for more than 20 years. The Springing the Blues Festival, in Jacksonville Beach, Fla., is one of the largest and oldest Blues festivals on the East Coast. It is a free outdoor festival held on the first weekend in April every year. Other major events include the Jacksonville Film Festival in May; the Freedom, Fanfare & Fireworks celebration in July; and the Greater Jacksonville Agricultural Fair in November.

半年間、語学留学でジャクソンビル校へ留学していました。

クラスは2クラス構成でした。
クラスはアジア系の学生は比較的少なく、私が留学している時は日本人は私一人でした。

滞在中は学生寮に入りたかったんですが、もともと学生寮がない学校だったのでホームステイにしました。
半年間のホームステイ生活は本当に楽しかったですし、いい思い出になりました。
ホストファミリーが積極的に話しかけてくれたので、家でも英語を使う機会がたくさんあったので自然に英語力がついたと思います。
