  • - For more than 20 years the ELI has successfully helped many people like you to achieve their goals. Come to the Pace ELI and you will enjoy the benefits of two convenient locations: New York City and Westchester, NY. Our New York City campus, located in the heart of lower Manhattan near Chinatown, Little Italy, and Wall Street, gives students the opportunity to explore the city with ease. Our Westchester campus, located just 40 minutes from New York City, offers both a quiet suburban campus with a modern fitness center and swimming pool and easy access to New York City. Our classes are small with less than 15 students. All of our instructors are experienced professionals with Masters degrees in TESOL or a related field. ELI Students have access to all Pace University facilities including the library, gymnasium, writing center, 24 hour computer resource centers, Pace student e-mail and wi-fi services, and more! The ELI also offers a full program of social and cultural activities that includes a free English Conversation Partner program, opportunities to volunteer in the community, attending professional sporting events (NBA, MLS, MLB), guided museum visits, a taste of local cuisine, and more! Students interested in studying a degree at Pace University are eligible to waive the TOEFL/IELTS requirement from their degree applications by completing the ELI Pre-Undergraduate and Pre-Graduate English programs.

About the  (ELI) English Language Institute

  • ELI is available at New York City Campus & Westchester Campus. The New York City Campus is located in the heart of Manhattan next to City Hall, and the Westchester Campus is located in Westchester Pleasantville & Briarcliff, 50 km north of New York, about 45 minutes by car or train from midtown Manhattan. ELI offers a seven-week spring and fall semester, a six-week summer semester, and a three-week program offered every January. Students receive 18 to 24 hours of instruction per week. ELI's Intensive English Program is divided into four levels, from beginner to advanced, depending on the level of difficulty, and at the beginning of each semester, students' proficiency is measured and the appropriate class placement is made. Conduct the test. ELI's curriculum provides classes for students who want to study in the United States to improve their comprehensive skills in reading, writing, grammar, listening, speaking, and vocabulary, which are necessary for future admission to an American university, and stay in the United States for other purposes. We also offer classes for those who want to do it. Students can choose and take classes such as TOEFL preparation or GMAT preparation, conversation practice, vocabulary learning, etc. under the guidance of the faculty in charge according to the interests and needs of the students. Advanced level students can attend Pace University undergraduate courses. ELI strives to organize as few classes as possible for more efficient classes, with an average of 13 students per class and classes ranging from 12 to 15 students.

  • The English Language Institute (ELI) at Pace University offers students, visitors, and immigrants the opportunity to improve their English skills for academic study, career advancement, or personal enrichment through a variety of programs.  We offer daytime Intensive English, Pre-Undergraduate English, Pre-Graduate English, and Pre-Law programs on both campuses.  Our evening programs focus on English for Professionals for students that prefer a part-time course in the evening to assist with job preparation, accent reduction, and business writing.  The ELI is able to offer customized, short-term program for groups with a special interest in American Culture or English learning.

Course Information

  • Focus of Study :
    This program is designed to help students, visitors, and immigrants improve their general English skills for academic study, career advancement, or personal enrichment.  We offer four levels of study from beginner to advanced with seven entry dates throughout the year.  Our course curriculum offers Integration of grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and listening in each course.  

    At the Advanced level (080), you can choose between the Intensive Program, the Pre-Undergraduate Program, and the Pre-Graduate program. Pre-Undergraduate and Pre-Graduate are for degree-seeking students and use academic materials (textbook readings, videotaped lectures, etc.) and tend to be more formal. The Intensive Program is for visitors and other students who do not plan to attend university in the United States. They use general interest materials (magazines, newspapers, etc.) and are more informal.  The Pre-Undergraduate and Pre-Graduate are the most advanced levels in the ELI are available to students with recommendations from ELI advisors and instructors.

    Benefit, Goal of this course :
    Grammar and Writing-Students learn grammar in the context of their own writing and through controlled exercises from the textbook. Students learn how to correct their mistakes and improve their writing by editing and revising their papers.
     
    Conversation and Listening-Students improve conversational fluency and listening comprehension. This class focuses on communicating ideas in English. Audio, video and reading materials are used for conversation topics and for developing listening skills.
     
    Reading and Vocabulary-Students learn different reading strategies and skills to increase vocabulary and reading comprehension. Students read a variety of newspaper and magazine articles, novels and stories, and academic texts to learn how to apply these strategies and skills.
     
    Pronunciation - Consonants and Vowels -Students learn the basic techniques needed to produce correct sounds. Students are taught how to form consonant and vowel sounds. Individual and common pronunciation problems are addressed. The teacher will show each student how to make accurate sounds and will correct common pronunciation problems. Other students in the class will give feedback as well.
     
    Pronunciation - Intonation, Stress and Rhythm-Students practice the 'music' of English. Students analyze how intonation, or the pitch of their voice, carries meaning. Students also learn the importance of word and sentence stress to being understood. Studying the rhythm of English helps students speak more clearly and fluently.
     
    Idioms-Students increase their English fluency through the mastery of idioms. Students practice idioms by using news reports, radio programs, songs, role play exercises, presentations, magazines, and advertisements.
     
    Walking Tours of NY-Students learn to research, organize, and lead tours to various sites around New York City. The students practice speaking, listening, and presentation skills while getting to know the most fascinating aspects of New York.
     
    American Culture Through Film-Students explore American culture by looking at excerpts from movies and television episodes.  Class discussions enable students to practice their speaking skills using the vocabulary introduced in the films.
     
    Exploring English Through the World of Art-Students develop their analytical skills in the English language while studying paintings at famous museums, galleries and exhibitions in New York City. The class focuses on expressing ideas that the works of art inspire. Students use creative writing tasks to develop their imagination in the English language.
     
    TOEFL and GMAT Preparation-Students learn the formats of the new iBT(Internet-based test) exams. Students practice test-taking strategies, time management and guessing techniques using past exams and simulated exams. Students review English grammar and vocabulary. (GMAT includes math review.)
     
    TOEFL Writing-Students develop skills and strategies for writing the TOEFL essay. The skills students will learn include decoding the topics, speed outlining, development of ideas, introductory paragraphs, unified support paragraphs, concluding paragraphs, transitions, editing and sentence structure. Through weekly written assignments, students will become more comfortable and confident working within the 30-minute time frame.

    Curriculum :
    Whether focusing on studying English to improve academic success, or achieving career goals, ELI's course of study can help students to reach their goal. There are four levels with 15 students in each class. It may take 7 or 14 weeks to complete each level (6 or 12 weeks in the summer terms).With Intensive English program, students will learn the essentials of grammar and writing; improve listening, speaking and pronunciation skills; and enhance vocabulary through reading. With the help of an advisor, students create their own program of study by choosing from the courses listed below and from other courses that may be available. F-1 students must enroll in a minimum of 18 hours per week (4 Intensive English classes).

Our New York residence facilities give students that feeling.     Westchester Campus
    (Pleasantville and Briarcliff )
    The Westchester campus provides the same sense of safety and belonging by offering students a place to call home while studying at Pace. Our Pleasantville and Briarcliff locations have seven on-campus residence halls ranging from traditional to apartment-style
    housing.

    Homestays
    The English Language Institute offers “homestay” experiences for international students or visitors who come to the United States in need of less than one year of housing. Past students have been pleased with their homestay experiences. All participating families live in safe neighborhoods, are close to public
    transportation, and welcome the opportunity to be a host family. Lifetime friendships between international students and American families offer everyone involved a greater mutual understanding and awareness of other cultures.

  • Two convenient locations provide students with a choice of settings. Pace's New York City campus, located in the heart of lower Manhattan near Chinatown, Little Italy, and Wall Street, gives students the opportunity to explore the city with ease. Westchester campus, located just 40 minutes from New York City, offers both a quiet suburban campus with a modern fitness center and swimming pool and easy access to New York City. On both campuses, students will have the chance to participate in many cultural and social activities organized by the ELI for additional real-life opportunities to use English skills actively.
