Conditional admission

  • Students who are applying to the Applied Language Institute (ESL program) who also wish to apply to the College of Arts & Sciences or the School of Computing and Engineering, and who do not have a TOEFL/IELTS score or whose TOEFL/IELTS score is below the university minimum requirement, will be considered for conditional admission

Course Information

  • Focus of Study and Benefits: 
    -A partial scholarship and tuition waiver is provided for all non-government sponsored students who are admitted to the Applied Language Institute (ALI).
    -ALI program costs. ALI students eligible to receive: one of three types of academic scholarships. These scholarships waive international tuition for academic degree classes at UMKC, saving over $35,000 for a four-year degree program.
    -The ALI is a fully accredited department of the University. ALI Students are UMKC students. They receive full access to university facilities, including: The state-of-the-art Swinney Recreation Center, Hi-tech computer and language labs, with an extensive library of language software, Miller Nichols Library and its extensive database of full-text research articles and journals, Admission to many free UMKC student activities, including theater productions, University student fairs, festivals, field trips, clubs, and more.
    -Some ALI classes count toward graduation! Students can earn credits towards graduation while learning English.
    -All ALI grades will impact students’ overall GPA at UMKC. This is a great chance for students to begin their academic study at UMKC with a high GPA.
    -There is NO TOEFL requirement for ALI graduates to enter into most undergraduate degree programs: many UMKC undergraduate programs do not require a TOEFL score from students who graduate from ALI classes.
    -Concurrent ESL and Academic enrollment is available for advanced students: Students can enroll in academic classes while finishing their English study.

    Curriculum :
    UMKC's ESL offers intensive, academic-based English language classes for International students, Adults and professions, and international visitors. Held 20 to 26 hours every week, the classes only consist of maximum of 18 students. Students learn English in a highly intensive environment with some social and cultural activites as part of the program. The core classes of the program include Grammar, Writing, Reading&Vocabulary, Speaking&Listening, American Culture and TOEFL preparation.

我學的是密集英語課程,課程皆為小班制,老師都能非常照顧到所有的學生。
通用英語課程將聽、說、讀、寫課程與特定技巧加強課程相結合,為每一位學生提供獨一無二的英語學習課程。 
一直很想出國唸書且羨幕別人能達到這個夢想,沒想到我今天也可以,我今天可以不單單是靠自己的力量,而是要由衷的感謝留學中心幫我圓這個夢~
因為有過這個學習的經驗讓我對自己的英文方面更有自信,更清楚知道未來要走的道路。

原本我一直煩惱,我的英文說得這麼爛,來到一個人生地不熟又語言不通的國家,只有我一個人沒有認識任何人,我該怎麼辦,直到我真的來到了這裡,我很慶幸有這機會自己也沒有放棄這個機會,來到這裡發現我之前所想的都是白擔心了,雖然英文很爛但只要你試著說加上肢體語言,別人都是聽得懂得,我收穫最大就是,不管想做什麼事,不要放棄,做就對了。踏出台灣才知道自己的不足,台灣有很多地方還沒這麼進步,這可能就是增進國際視野吧!!~~
