About the  American Language and Culture Institute (ALCI)

  • The American Language and Culture Institute (ALCI Chico), is located on the campus of CSU Chico.ALCI Chico provides general English language skills for students’ personal and professional growth, as well as an introduction to American culture and the higher education system in California and the United States. The City of Chico is located 90 miles north of Sacramento in the northern end of the lush Sacramento Valley. With an urban population of approximately 90,000, Chico has the charm of a small town, with all the amenities of a big city. Students who do not meet the English proficiency requirements, may be able to apply for conditional admission. In this case, students study English at the American Language and Culture Institute on the CSU, Chico campus. When students reach proficiency, they may begin their studies at the University.

  • California State University, Chico (Chico State) is the second-oldest campus in the twenty-three-campus California State University system. It is located in Chico, California, about ninety miles north of Sacramento. As of the Fall 2012 semester, the university had a total enrollment of 16,470 students. The university offers 126 types of Bachelor's degrees, 35 Master's degrees, and four types of teaching credentials. Chico State is known for its academic programs in engineering, science, computing, business, technology, environmental studies, Theatre Arts and communication. The university has more than 50 Departments and offers more than 150 undergraduate degrees. It is organized into seven colleges and four schools.

  • There are a number of accommodations in Downtown Chico and the surrounding area that are within walking distance of the CSU, Chico campus. 

    On campus housing
    Rooms are minimal amenity and include bed linens (sheets and a blanket), pillow and pillow case, bath towel, soap, and a cup. Things you may want to bring to make your stay more comfortable include a robe and slippers, shampoo, a washcloth, an alarm clock for your room, etc. Custodial staff maintains all public areas and provides the linen service at the beginning of your stay, but will not clean or service individual rooms. Wireless internet access is available and a user name and password will be provided at your request. Card-operated washers and dryers are provided in each residence hall. Cards can be purchased in the residence hall lobby.

  • The City of Chico is located 90 miles north of Sacramento in the northern end of the lush Sacramento Valley. With an urban population of approximately 90,000, Chico has the charm of a small town, with all the amenities of a big city. Downtown Chico is within a block of campus and offers a wide variety of shopping, dining, and cultural experiences. Bidwell Park, one of the largest municipal parks in the country at 3,670 acres, stretches nearly 11 miles from campus east into the foothills and provides year-round recreation activities.

大学のあるチコは、カリフォルニア北部の農業地帯に位置し、北東部シェラネバダ山脈と西部海岸沿いの山々に囲まれた、自然の美しい安全なカレッジタウンです。
人口10万人で、都会に比べて物価の安い地域にもかかわらず、大都市並みの文化的娯楽を楽しむことができます。
また、全米で最大級を誇る市営公園ビッドウエルパークがチコのダウンタウンから東部数キロにわたって広がり、勉強だけでなく、休暇にアウトドアを楽しむことができます。
大学のキャンパスから街の中心までは徒歩圏内で、銀行やスーパー、レストランなどが揃っているので、大学生活を送るのに不自由を感じることはあまりありません。

캘리포니아에 있는 주립 대학교인 치코를 선택해서 6개월 정도 어학연수를 다녀온 사람입니다.

늦은 나이로 영어 공부를 시작에 많은 고민을 하고 선택하는데에도 신중을 기하여서 선택했습니다.
먼저 이 학교를 선택한 것은 캘리포니아에서 2번째로 오래된 학교 라는 것 그만큼 역사와 전통이 깊다는 것..
그리고 더 중요한 것은 여자학생들의 비율이 남성보다 많은 것이 너무나도 마음에 들었어요.
공부에 집중 할 수도 있고 치코 라는 곳이 크지가 않거든요. 그래서 유흥도 없겠다 공부에 전념 할 수 있겠다 싶었죠.
무엇보다 한국인 비율이 많지 않아서 내가 더 영어를 열심히 해야 된다는거? 그리고 영어가 사투리도 없고 정통 영어라서 너무 좋았어요.


두서 없게 말했지만 다시 말하자면, 
일단은 저는 다른 캘리포니아 대학도 많이 보았지만 치코를 선택한 큰 이유는 치코는 작은 마을로써 자연 환경이 아름다우며 대도시의 장점과 소도시의 장점이 공존하는  그런 곳 이라는 점에서 선택을 하였습니다. 물론 학교 프로그램도 많이 보았지요.
프로그램은 집중 영어 프로그램 (Intensive English Program (20hrs/wk) ) 을 선택하였고 주당 20시간의 수업을 들었어요.
다른 곳은 많게는 서른명 정도로 배치 되는 걸로 알고있는데 캘리포니아는 크게 안 하는 것으로 알고 있어요.
치코같은 경우는  10명정도의 인원으로 수업을 진행해서 더욱 더 작거든요. 그게 참 좋았어요.
많으면 많은대로 좋지만 적은 인원으로 수업한다는 자체가 매리트로 다가왔어요. 사람들도 많이 사귀고 그리고 좀더 친밀하게 다가갈 수 있는 그런 계기라고 생각해요. 아무래도 한국시스템에 맞춰서 공부를 하다보니 주입식일 수 밖에 없었는데 미국 토론 방식으로 수업을 진행해서 자신감도 생기고 그리고 말 할 수 있는 권한도 많아서 그런 점들을 극복 할 수 있었습니다. 


치코 캠퍼스는 60개 이상의 나라에서 모인 400명의 유학생을 포함하여 캘리포니아 주립 대학교 중에서 학생 만족도 자체 조사에서 석사과정 학생들에 의해 대학 군내에서 1위로 선정 될 만큼 만족도가 높으며 수준 높은 교육이 이루어 지며 교육 9개 단과 대학교 300 이상의 전공 과정이 제공되며, 치코시는 미국에서 살기 좋은 5개의 대학 촌 중에서 하나로로 선정 될 만큼 학생들이 편히 공부 할 수 있다는 그런 점들이 매우 마음에 들어서 선택하였어요.

작지만 그만큼 실속이 가득 찬 대학교가 아닐까 생각합니다. 



그리고 더 저를 끌리게 한 사실은 아시아 인들이 적고 백인들의 분포가 50% 정도가 넘다는 사실이었어요.

아무래도 영어를 배워도 정통 영어를 배우고 싶은 욕심이 있었는데 그것을 충족 시켜주는 이유였습니다. 


작지만 속이 알찬 대학교 캘리포니아  대학교, 치코 마음에 참 들었습니다.


회사를 버리고 간 것인 만큼 정말 열심히 마음껏 공부 하고 돌아왔네요.
꼭 추천해요. 캘리포니아 주립대학교! ㅎㅎ

小さな町にある学校で、学費が他よりも少し安いという理由でこの学校を選択しました。


たしかに遊ぶところはほとんどありませんが、どうせ勉強しにきているのだからと思えば、
勉強するには本当に良い環境だと思います。
そして学のキャンパスから街の中心までは徒歩圏内で、銀行やスーパー、レストランなどが揃っているので、
大学生活を送るのに不自由を感じることはあまりありません。

ただ、私は寮住まいだったので学校までもちかくて便利だったのですが、
ホームステイをしていた友達は学校から結構遠くてバスで通わなければならず不便そうだったので、
住まいに関してはよく考えた方が良いと思います。

授業に関しては、小規模なので発言がしやすい環境だったと思います。
内容もアカデミックなものから日常生活に生かせるものまで多様でした。
また、留学中は現地の学生が使用する施設も自由に利用することができ、
アメリカ人の学生と接することができる機会も多いです。

とても推薦したい学校です。
