About the  Intensive English Program

  • Established in 1954, the Intensive English Program (IEP) at Saint Michael's College is the oldest ESL program in New England and one of the 12 oldest in the nation. The Intensive English Program (IEP) is for students who wish to improve their English skills in a university setting. Many IEP students intend to study at the undergraduate or graduate level when their English improves. Others come for short-term language training as individuals or in groups. Saint Michael’s assesses each student’s level, strengths and weaknesses and provides appropriate instruction. The IEP's strong history demonstrates its commitment to academic excellence, intercultural understanding, and attention to students' individual needs and interests. Each year, over 200 students from around the world come to the university to receive the highest quality of English instruction in order to meet their personal, professional or academic goals. IEP students have full access to Saint Michael's facilities, including the library, the student health center, computer labs with Internet access, and sports facilities. The IEP is a proud member of UCIEP, a U.S. consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs known for its high professional standards and quality English language instruction. Accommodation

  • EP students up to about 25 years-old are housed in Ambassador Housing, where they fully experience university life in one of our most modern residence halls. Students have a single room located in a 4-person or 8-person suite that they share with American students. Students also have the option of living off campus on private rooms or apartments, or in local hotels. The Office for International Student Services will assist in this. Limited on-campus housing is available on a first-come, first-served basis for students older than 25.

Surrounding Area

  • Burlington, the city in which Saint Michael's campus is located, is an attractive college village that embodies Vermont's most artistic and cultural aspect. Burlington is also recognized as Vermont's largest city with Saint Michael and three other major universities and thus it offers an ideal environment for students to be educated in. The city's remarkable nature like Lake Champlain, Green Mountains and the Adirondack Mountains is what enables its residents to actively enjoy skiing, hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, and camping. Recently, Burlington was selected as the second happiest place to live in America by Self Magazine and this fact is eagerly supported by the city's own outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate their city's proximity to Montreal, Canada, a city 2-hour drive away from Burlington, and Bost, a city 4-hour drive away from Burlington.
