About the  American Language Institute

  •  The ALI is a division of the College of Extended Studies, one of the eight colleges of SDSU, the flagship campus of the California State University system and the largest university in the San Diego region. SDSU has been designated a "Research University" with high research activity by the Carnegie Foundation. The ALI is among the largest ESL programs in the U.S. with 3,000 students enrolled annually from over 70 countries. The ALI offers two main programs: English for Academic Purposes (EAP), which includes pre-MBA preparation, and the Intensive English Communication (IEC). Also offered are business programs, Study Tours, and certificates in business, e-commerce, TEFL (for teachers of English), as well as internships. The ALI is a proud member of UCIEP, a U.S. consortium of University and College Intensive English Programs known for its high professional standards and quality English language instruction.

  • San Diego State University (SDSU, State) is a public research university in San Diego, and is the largest and oldest higher education facility in San Diego County. Founded in 1897 as San Diego Normal School, it is the third-oldest university in the 23-memberCalifornia State University (CSU), and is considered the flagship campus of the entire system. SDSU has a student body of more than 34,000 and an alumni base of more than 260,000. The university awards 189 types of bachelor's degrees, 91 different master's degrees, 22 types of doctoral degrees including Ed.D, Ed.S, DPT, J.D., Au.D, Ph.D. programs in collaboration with Claremont Graduate University,UC Davis, UC Riverside, UCSD, and UCSB. Conditional admission

  • Undergraduate Conditional Admission to San Diego State University (SDSU) is for qualified students, who want to apply to SDSU as a first-time freshman, but do not currently meet the SDSU English language proficiency requirements. Academically eligible students can receive guaranteed admission to SDSU upon completion of English language study at the ALI. Academic eligibility is determined by a transcript evaluation with IERF Evaluation Services.

Course Information

  • Curricular Focus: 
    This program is intended for students and business men of all English levels who are willing to improve their practical English abilities. IEC is focused on Speaking and Listening, but students can also spend time on grammar, reading&comprehension, and writing. IEC also provides opportunities for students to practice with teachers, American students, and teaching assistants. Start dates are flexible for students' schedule. 

    Goals &Strength: 
    interaction with native speakers/ flexible start dates/ observe college classes/ conversation partners and on-campus classes. 

    Curriculum: 
    Students will improve fluency, listening comprehension, speech grammars, and pronunciation. In addition students will have speaking (OC) classes 8 hours a week for situation conversation skills in business, travel, and social interaction area. Students will have 23 hours of classes including 8 hours of speaking class,12 hours of fundamental studies (listening, reading, writing, and grammar), and 4 hours of elective classes. Not every class is offered every semester; however students can always have opportunities to select from Business English, TOEFL Preparation, Idioms & Slangs, American Culture, and more. IEC program offers 7 levels of courses ranging from beginners to advanced. According to the results of placement test, students will be placed in challenging speaking class and fundamental studies class. Advisors will help students plan personal schedules and activities according to their levels. Intermediate and advanced students will be allowed to take college classes, and students will enroll in IEC programs for 5 to 20 weeks. Average class size is 14 students.

Course Information

  • Curricular Focus: 
    the English Academics for Purpose program is designed for students who wish to enroll in undergraduate or graduate programs in American colleges and universities, or for those preparing for TOEFL, IELTS, GMAT, GRE exams. The program seeks to help students to make a successful transition to their further academic endeavors. Advantages and goals: Develop academic strategies and techniques, professional college counseling, abundant opportunities to interact with native speakers 

    Curriculum: 
    the EAP program provides the same lessons in different levels that range from beginner to advanced. Upon their arrival, students will take an Entrance Exam on areas such as listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar, and be placed into the right level according to their English proficiency. the Program aims to take foreign language students onto a level equivalent to that of native speakers. Every week, students will be given lessons on reading comprehension, writing, grammar structure, listening, speaking and TOEFL preparation for 25 hours. This curriculum will develop specific techniques concerning areas such as GMAT, GRE, essay writing, vocabulary and business administration. The course is provided in 12, 17, 18-week terms. After taking the entrance exam, if certain students perform competent English skills, they will be able to enroll in SDSU's classes at the same time, with no extra charges. Professional counseling agents provide ample support by suggesting different schools, career paths and academic choices. Average class size includes 15 students.

    Living in on-campus apartments are an exciting experience for any new international student. All apartments are fully furnished and include spacious kitchens with basic appliances (fridge, stove, oven, garbage disposal, and microwave).

    For temporary or long-term housing, you may stay in a hotel or residential hotel. To make a reservation, please visit the hotel's site. On the reservation page, there will be a box for "Comments" or "Special Requests," where you may write that you will be a student at SDSU-ALI and request a discount.

  • San Diego has natural beauty and warmth that captivate tourists from all over the world. San Diego is located in the corner of the West, and it is the 9th biggest, and one of the safest cities in the United States. To ALI students, San Diego is also great in that it has a convenient public transportation system including San Diego trollies. San Diego's almost perfect leather (average of 21 degrees celsius), sand beaches ranging over 71 miles, and snow covered mountains are sutiable for year around indoor outdoor recreation activities opportunities. San Diego has world famous San Diego Zoo and Sea World. In addition, there are also over 100 golf courses, major sports leagues, museums, theaters, operas, dnaces, and other artistic exhibitions. Surrounded by Pacific, and mountains, deserts, Los Angeles can be reached by car. ALI students can also visit San Francisco Las Vegas, and Grand Canyon.

學校的活動很多,設施也會不定期更新,每個周末都有安排活動帶學生出遊,老師教學方式活潑也很有耐心,每堂課的內容雖然不同但都注重再加強同學的聽說讀寫部分。每學期舉辦兩次英語能力測驗的考試,便利於要進修的學生,也而外開選修課提供給學生參加。學生都來自世界各地,除了可以認識各個地方不同的文化之外,也可以訓練聽除了美式以外的口音。
我是住在學校的宿舍裡面,它算是一個小公寓裡面有4間獨立的個人房間,一個共用淋浴間,一 個共用廁所,一個共用小客廳,一個簡易小廚房,還有共用的冰箱跟微波爐,房間裡面附有書桌、 獨立抽屜、衣櫃、衣架、床,是還滿完整的,不過來之前要另外去買床單跟枕頭,這是沒有附的。走 出去自己的小套房到外面走廊中間有電磁爐跟烤箱可以自己開伙煮東西吃,這裡還有洗衣機跟烘 乾機可以洗衣服。如果在房間裡面有發現任何問題可以去一樓櫃台問,他們會很樂意幫你,如果想 打球或玩樂。可以在櫃檯借籃球、足球、地下室有撞球,或是桌遊都可以在一樓櫃台借出。 走路去學校是十五分鐘,如果不想走可以搭校園巴士。宿舍環境很乾淨很新。
