About the  Woodward Academy

  • Woodward Academy (also known as Woodward or WA) is an private, co-educational college-preparatory school for pre-kindergarten to 12th grade on two campuses located in College Park and Johns Creek, Georgia, United States, within the Atlanta metropolitan area. Woodward Academy was founded in 1900 as Georgia Military Academy. Originally an all-male school, in 1964 it became coeducational and was renamed Woodward Academy in 1966. The boarding program was discontinued in 1993. Woodward draws its students from 23 metro Atlanta counties taken to school by MARTA, Woodward buses, parents, or carpool. The school has two campuses – the Main Campus in College Park (preK-12) and Woodward North in Johns Creek (preK-6).

Course information

  • Focus of Study :
Woodward Academy is divided into five schools. Located on the Main Campus in historic College Park are the Upper, Middle, Lower, and Primary schools. The second campus, Woodward North, serves preK through sixth grade. The Primary School has students in preK through 3rd grade, the Lower School has 4th through 6th grade students, the Middle School has 7th and 8th grade students, and the Upper School has students in 9th grade through 12th grade.

Benefit, Goal of this course :
We take the time to get to know your child so they can grow to their fullest potential. If your child is particularly strong in sciences, we want to make sure they are placed at a more intensive level with our honors preparatory or advanced placement tracks. But perhaps they need extra reinforcement in English? We can support them there, too, with our college preparatory or enriched preparatory tracks where they can continue to build their self-confidence in the subject. It’s a balancing act to get it right, but at Woodward, we’ll meet your child where they are and give them the tools they need to succeed in school and in life.

    Curriculum :
    COLLEGE PREPARATORY (CP)
    - Standard, academically rigorous college preparatory work. Your child will learn critical reading, writing, thinking, and computation skills that will prepare them to continue the study at the college or university level.
    - Teachers provide structure and guidance, emphasize mastery of skills, and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of a variety of learners.

    ENRICHED PREPARATORY (EP)
    - EP encompasses all of the elements of the CP course, adding concepts and materials above the mastery level and moving toward more independent and critical thinking.

    HONORS PREPARATORY (HP)
    - HP courses are intended for advanced, ambitious students who are willing and able to complete more assignments independently, in greater depth, and with more analysis and critical thinking.
    - If your child would like to graduate with honors they should take some honors-level core courses by the end of 10th grade.
    - If your child is successful in HP courses, often students culminate the progression of their study by taking AP coursework.

    ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP)
    - We offer 24 Advanced Placement courses beginning in 10th grade.
    - The curricular requirements of all AP courses are prescribed by the College Board; therefore, AP faculty teach a required curriculum in preparation for the national standardized exam in the spring.
    - Colleges may grant credit to students receiving scores of 3, 4, or 5 on the 5-point College-Board exam. (76% of Woodward students pass with a 3 or higher.)
    - AP courses are rigorous, fast-paced, and intensive, requiring more outside preparation and covering material with greater depth. They are designed to engage your child in intense discussions, complex problem solving, and critical thinking.
