About the  Illinois Eastern Community Colleges

  • Illinois Eastern Community Colleges District #529 (IECC) is located in a 3,000-square-mile (7,800 km2) area of southeastern Illinois near the Illinois-Indiana border. The multi-college District includes Frontier Community College at Fairfield, Lincoln Trail College at Robinson, Olney Central College at Olney, and Wabash Valley College at Mt. Carmel.

Because the college District is one of 39 tax-supported community college districts in the State of Illinois, the cost is very affordable. In addition, the District has purposely held the line on costs to assure that all students have equal access to higher education. (IECC's tuition rate is one of the lowest in the tri-state area.)

Course Information

  • In addition to the successful International Students Program, IECC offers an intensive, academically oriented program in English as a Second Language (ESL) for international students who wish to study at colleges and universities in the United States. ESL is offered at the Wabash Valley College campus in Mt. Carmel. The ESL program enables students to begin academic work quickly, while improving English language abilities, and complete their college studies successfully. Additional information on ESL testing can be found here.

Students who come into IECC with a TOEFL score of 500 or the equivalent will gain admission to academic courses. However, a student with a score of 500 may be required, at the disrection of the ESL instructor, to attend one or more ESL classes. The decision is made on the basis of scores on individual sections of the TOEFL. all students who do not have official TOEFL scores over 500 will be tested. After assesment of a student's abilities in grammar and writing structure, non-transferable, the grades are used by the college to determine whether students may progress in ESL and /or into academic studies.

Location

Accommodation

  • The International Student Program will help you locate housing. Although IECC has only a limited amount of campus housing, many attractive housing accommodations are available in the area. Housing is the student's responsibility, not the responsibility of Illinois Eastern Community Colleges. However, we will make every effort to assist students in finding suitable housing before students arrive in the United States. Students who apply early will be given first consideration.  Be sure to complete the Housing Application Form which is included in the Admission Application packet.

    Host Family Living
Many community residents have extra rooms in their homes to rent to international students. These host families will try to make the students stay here comfortable. The host family accommodations are especially good for students who are learning English or have no friends or acquaintances in this area. This arrangement will cost approximately $450 per month. Living with a host family is a great way to get acquainted with an American familly in a typical American home.

    Apartment Living
Many apartments are very close to our campuses so students can walk or ride bikes to their college. Students may share a one or two bedroom apartment with other students or live alone, if they prefer. It is less expensive to share an apartment, and we will try to pre-arrange a roommate for interested students. One bedroom apartments cost $500 or more per month. Apartment living is convenient and ideal for the more independent student. Apartments consist of a bedroom, living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom and closets.

Surrounding Area

  • Illinois is a midwestern state bordering Indiana in the east and the Mississippi River in the west. Nicknamed "the Prairie State," it's marked by farmland, forests, rolling hills and wetlands. Chicago, one of the largest cities in the U.S, is in the northeast on the shores of Lake Michigan. It’s famous for its skyscrapers, such as sleek, 1,451-ft. Willis Tower and the neo-Gothic Tribune Tower.
