    The goal of the English Language Program (ELP) is to provide international students and professionals an intensive academic experience to provide awareness of international and intercultural understanding. Our philosophy is to provide each individual with the opportunity to achieve his or her goals. We know that each student brings unique experiences, abilities and objectives to the class. This program is designed to maximize the potential of each individual.

    The English Language Program (ELP) is an intensive curriculum designed to teach various English language skills, such as reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The program has six levels of instruction: Beginning, High-Beginning, Intermediate, High-Intermediate, Advanced and Pre-University, with a concurrent enrollment option. All students are in class 22 hours a week, with the exception of those who are enrolled concurrently. These students have a course load of 12 hours in the ELP and one three-credit course as a UNF student.
    At the ELP, students will study in an atmosphere that surrounds them with the English language and American culture. The ELP is located in the heart of the UNF campus, where students will be able to meet and interact with American university students every day. UNF has an International Center and an international student association that organize events geared toward acclimating international students to campus.

    The University offers a number of amenities for UNF ELP students, including two resort style swimming pools, a state-of-the-art fitness facility, UNF Athletics games, UNF concerts and events, an on-campus market day, and free on-campus movies.

    Academic Program: The English Language Program is an intensive program designed to teach various skills of the English Language, such as reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The program has 6 levels of instruction: Beginning, High-Beginning, Intermediate, High-Intermediate, Low-Advanced, Advanced, and Pre-University, with a concurrent enrollment option. All the students are in class 22 hours a week except the ones who are enrolled concurrently; those students have a course load of 12 hours as an ELP student and one 3-credit course as a UNF student. The academic program is rigorous to prepare the students for the university. You will have dedicated and highly qualified instructors to help you learn English effectively.

    Description of Classes: The curriculum at the English Language Program combines the formal acquisition of academic skills with the communicative approach to English language learning. Classes are combined by skills: reading and writing and listening and speaking. Grammar is a separate subject. Students also receive additional practice during Vocabulary, Writing, and Pronunciation workshops.

    Levels of Instruction: There are 6 levels of instruction in the ELP. Students with basic knowledge of English will start at the Beginning level. After that, the levels go as follows: High-Beginning, Intermediate, High-Intermediate, Advanced, Pre-University, Pre-University/Concurrent. In the lower levels, Beginning - High Intermediate, the students will work on mastering the foundation of the English language learning. Upper levels, Level Advanced and Pre-University, are dedicated to advancing the students' skills needed for success in an American university. Students who score 470 on PB TOEFL (the test is given at the ELP every semester) before Level Pre-University can take a 3-credit UNF class and study in the ELP part-time.

    Concurrent Enrollment: When students reach Level Pre-University in the English Language Program, they may have the opportunity to be concurrently enrolled in a course related to their major or a General Education course at the University of North Florida. This is not a guaranteed component of this level, nor does it guarantee admission to the University of North Florida. It is a privilege for students who meet the requirements and successfully complete Advanced level.

    the English language
    ♦ Advanced: perfecting the components of the
    English language
    ♦ Pre-University: preparing to use academic English
    language skills in the University setting
    ♦ Pre-University Concurrent: Preparing to use
    academic English language skills in the University
    setting part time and taking one three-credit hour
    UNF course. 

    ELP provides students with additional after-class activities:
    Language Activities: English Power Hour™: During these activities, the students will play games and converse in English. These activities are a good way to improve your speaking fluency in a relaxing way. UNF students come and join ELP students during these activities. This is a great way to practice English with native speakers, learn about American culture, and make new friends.

    Field trips, volunteer activities and other fun activities: Each semester, ELP offers 2 field trips to local Florida attractions such as Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, Wet and Wild, Alligator Farm, and others. In addition, the ELP offers volunteer activities which are a great way to learn more about the American culture and life-style while practicing English. Moreover, you will receive a volunteer certificate at the end of the semester and use these experiences to enhance your resume.

  • THE ELP HIGHLY RECOMMENDS UNF HOUSING OR "FRASSATI", A PRIVATELY OPERATED STUDENT HOUSING.

    ELP students are not required to live on campus, but they do have the option to fill out a housing contract to live in UNF housing during their study at the ELP. 

    Generally, students are responsible for arranging their own housing. Some popular options are apartment complexes near the campus as well as UNF housing. The English Language Program staff will help you understand your housing options.

    For Fall 2017/Spring 2018 all residential first-year students will reside in the four first-year housing areas: Osprey Hall, Osprey Landing, Osprey Cove and Osprey Crossings.
     
    Osprey Hall residents will reside within a double occupancy room. Private rooms will only be utilized to accommodate medical and disability needs as determined by the UNF Disability Resource Center.
     
    Osprey Crossings residents will reside within primarily a double occupancy room. There may be a limited number of triple rooms available depending on enrollment. Private rooms will only be utilized to accommodate medical and disability needs as determined by the UNF Disability Resource Center.
     
    Osprey Landing and Osprey Cove residents will reside within a triple occupancy room. Double and private rooms will only be utilized to accommodate medical and disability needs as determined by the UNF Disability Resource Center.

Surrounding Area

  • Beaches
    Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach are just a 10-minute drive from campus. When you come to Jacksonville, don’t forget your bathing suit!

    Sports lovers will enjoy Jacksonville’s offerings of golf, soccer, tennis, fishing, boating, hiking and water sports. If you’re more of a fan than an athlete, there are local professional teams for you to cheer for including the Jacksonville Suns baseball team, the National Football League’s Jacksonville Jaguars and the Jacksonville Armada soccer team.

    The St. John’s Town Center, one of the largest outdoor shopping malls in Northeast Florida, is located less than five minutes from the University of North Florida campus. The St. Augustine Outlets, a discount shopping complex featuring name brands such as Levi’s, Nike and Calvin Klein, is located just south of campus.

    The Oldest City in the United States
    St. Augustine is America’s oldest city. The Spanish colonized St. Augustine in 1574, giving the city the feel of a small South American or European town. Today, small shops and cafés line the cobble stone streets. There are more than 20 different historical sites to choose from, making St. Augustine a favorite day-trip location for visitors.

    Field Trips
    Twice a semester on Fridays, ELP students go on field trips to Florida attractions, such as Universal Studios, Disney World, Seaworld, the Alligator Farm and others. These field trips are included in the cost of tuition.
