  • Intensive English Programs (IEPs), like ESL Services, exist in one form or another on the campuses of all major research universities in the US. The University of Texas at Austin (UT) has supported an ESL program in the International Office since 1965. English as a Second Language Services exemplifies The University of Texas’ long-standing commitment to international education and to the promotion of global understanding and goodwill.As part of the university, ESL Services provides instruction and programs that are critical to UT’s mission. Specifically, ESL Services offers current and future international students and scholars high-quality English language training and orientation programs to assist them in attaining better proficiency in English and in broadening their cultural awareness in order to ensure their success at the University of Texas.In addition to offering classes to help matriculated international students improve their English skills, ESL Services participates as a critical component of language-focused academic programs by providing opportunities for learning, collaboration, and research. These essential activities, conducted by current graduate students in a variety of departments, include classroom observations; internships; and data collection for dissertations, theses, and other academic publications.

Course Information


  • If you need to expand your English for communication, study, or pleasure, ELP is designed for you. ELP students include undergraduates, visiting scholars, business people, and family members of UT faculty and students. ELP students can choose intensive or part-time study, depending on their visa status. We offer 7 levels of instruction, from beginning to advanced. Classes have an average of 11-12 students.

    Each of the 7 levels of the English Language Program (ELP) correspond to a proficiency level. Following are the levels, a short description of proficiencies, and their relation to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

    ELP1. Beginning: A student at this level can communicate on topics such as personal interests, daily routine, family, and likes/dislikes using words, phrases, and short sentences.

    ELP2, High Beginning: A student at this level can initiate and maintain communication on topics related to daily life and can provide information in phrases, simple sentences, and short compound sentences.

    ELP3. Low Intermediate: A student at this level can communicate on familiar topics and provide information with some success. Uses a limited range of vocabulary and structures.

    ELP4. Mid Intermediate: A student at this level can express and support opinion and can handle a variety of uncomplicated communicative tasks with moderate success.

    ELP5. High Intermediate: A student at this level can handle a variety of communicative tasks with success, although errors may be evident.

    ELP6. Low Advanced: A student at this level can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics.  Can communicate effectively in a variety of contexts and if miscommunication occurs, can repair them.

    ELP7. Advanced: A student at this level can handle a variety of communicative tasks with ease and confidence. Can almost always be understood with little effort by the general public.

    Intensive Study
    Intensive study in the ELP Program includes the four core courses shown below. Classes meet 5 days a week for a total of 18 hours weekly. There will be daily homework.

    Part-time Study
    You may register for any of the core courses or elective courses to suit your language needs or your schedule. Core courses meet 4.5 hours a week and will have daily homework. Elective courses meet 4 hours a week.

    Core ELP Courses
    Writing (MWF 9-10:30AM) - Express yourself more effectively in academic and non-academic writing, with work on content, accuracy, and organization.

    Grammar (MWF 11-12:30)- Increase your accuracy in spoken and written contexts, and learn grammatical structures common in U.S. English.

    Listening and Speaking (MWF 2-3:30) - Communicate more comfortably and increase your understanding in a variety of settings, from informal conversations to formal presentations.

    Reading and Discussion (TTH 1-3:15) - Improve your comprehension of fiction and non-fiction, and develop your vocabulary, discussion skills, and reading speed.

    Test Preparation Electives
    Our TOEFL, IELTS, and GRE test preparation courses focus on both content and test-taking strategies. We also offer a Pronunciation class that will help you speak more clearly, focusing on individual sounds as well as word-level and sentence-level patterns. There is a language proficiency prerequisite for most elective courses. (TTH 10-11:50AM)

    Admission Requirements
    Graduation from at least high school in your country. We recommend that you know at least some English vocabulary before enrolling.

  • On-campus housing 
    On-campus housing is available only to enrolled students at UT-Austin. While you are not required to live on campus, residence halls or dormitories are available for you as an international student. These living facilities provide a room and meals, which are served in a cafeteria. Priority is given to first-year students. Apply as early as possible as spaces are limited.

    UT Graduate and Family housing offers inexpensive off-campus furnished apartments for single and married students and are available on a limited basis. 

Activity

  • ESL SOCIAL EVENTS
     Services organizes many social and cultural events for our students throughout the year.

    Social Activities - Our activities include TalkTime conversation practice, holiday parties, sports practice, craft making/cooking, and visiting places around Austin. Each semester our students are also invited to a program-wide BBQ picnic or bowling party and an end-of-semester reception with dinner. 

    Partnerships to Advance Language Study and Culture Exchange (PALS) – The PALS program pairs together international and American students at UT for the purposes of cultural exchange and to practice English conversation skills.

    Texas Excursions – ESL students are invited to participate in International Office trips. These excursions are a great way to visit and experience some of the great activities Austin and Texas have to offer.

    WHAT Weekly Newsletter - ESL Services publishes a weekly newsletter called the "WHAT" (What's Happening Around Town) to help our students know about events going on at ESL Services and around Austin.

Getting to the school from the airport

  • The local airport, Austin Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA), is small and easy to navigate. The airport staff is friendly and eager to help you. There is an information desk in the Arrivals area of the airport that will assist you with any of your questions.

    If you arrive on a Saturday or Sunday, you will find that the university and most government offices are closed. However, most retail stores will be open over the weekend. If you arrive on a weekday (Monday through Friday), we invite you to visit the International Office (INT) and ESL Services between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.

    The airport is located approximately 15 miles from the campus. Unfortunately, we are not able to make arrangements to meet you at the airport. Please see the transportation options below to get you to your destination.

    Options:
    Bus: Capitol Metro’s Route 100 Airport Flyer departs ABIA every 30 minutes. The cost is $1.50. This bus stops on campus at 2 locations on campus. The trip from the airport to campus takes approximately 30 minutes.

    SuperShuttle: This is a shared-ride van service. The approximate fare from the airport to the campus area is $17 for first person and $10 for each additional person. Reservations are recommended but not required. Make reservations by phone at 800-258-3826 or on the Super Shuttle website.

    Taxi or Ride Share Service: The fare from the airport to campus is approximately $30-$40.

蔣怡心

在美國的這段時間，除了上課之外，因為希望可以遊覽整個國家，所以也自己著手開始規畫行程。從最開始的規劃、自己找相關的資訊、報名參加活動，所有的過程都是自己獨立完成。之所以能夠自己一手完成這些，我想是因為在新加坡上課的過程中，學校老師給的鼓勵，所以在很多需要英語溝通的地方自己都變得相對於以往有自信，然而寄宿家庭也帶給我莫大的影響，他們教我用正向的態度去面對遇到的難題。我記憶中很深刻的事情是，有幾天我因為連續幾天的大太陽而顯得有些煩悶，然而家庭告訴我說：如果沒有這些太陽，你來到這裡就看不到這麼美麗的風景。雖然只是很簡單的幾句話，影響卻很大。在還沒有出發之前，我想我和很多人都一樣，認為出國是一件算還蠻了不起的事情，好像出去一趟就會有所成就，一切都會很順利，但事實上並非如此，不是所有的一切都像想像中美好，生活上還是會有許多大大小小的問題需要自己想辦法解決，藉由這次的留學也讓我成長了許多。
