Orange Coast College's 164-acre campus is located in Costa Mesa just minutes from Southern California’s beautiful beaches. OCC features exceptional facilities and the latest in technology and offers more than 135 academic and career programs, including one of the nation’s largest and most acclaimed public nautical programs. Nearly half the students on campus are enrolled in one of OCC's Career and Technical Education programs and enrollment averages around 22,000 students each semester. OCC consistently ranks as one of the top colleges in the state – and the top college in Orange County - for the number of students it transfers to the University of California and California State University systems. Additionally, many OCC students go on to transfer to private colleges and universities within California and across the nation. Part of the Coast Community College District, OCC offers fall, winter, spring, and summer classes and is fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

Course Information

  • Focus of Study :
    The ESL Credit Program is recommended if you are interested in:
    - meeting the requirement of full-time enrollment
    - completing a degree or certificate at OCC
    - transferring from OCC to a four-year university
    - improving English communication in business and professional life 

    Curriculum :
    English as a Second Language (ESL)
    Beginning Listening and Speaking   (72 lecture hours)  
    Listening comprehension, oral communication, and pronunciation skills for beginning academic students who are non-native speakers of English. Practice in spontaneous conversation and small group discussion. 

    Grammar, Reading and Writing 1  (72 lecture hours; 36 lab hours)  
    Prerequisite(s): Qualifying score on the ESL placement test administered through the OCC Assessment Center or approval of the ESL Advisor; Also, qualifying score on the OCC ESL placement test for ESL A021 level or higher or concurrent enrollment in ESL A011.

    Intensive introductory level of integrated basic grammar, reading, and writing of American English for international students who are pursuing college coursework. Includes work on sentence structure, questions, verb tenses, spelling and vocabulary. 

    Grammar, Reading, and Writing 2   (72 lecture hours; 36 lab hours)  
    Integrates intensive study of grammar, reading, and writing for low-intermediate students who are non-native speakers of English. Introduction to writing basic responses to simplified texts. Extended writing practice for grammar and mechanics. 

    Listening and Speaking 2: Intermediate Oral (72 lecture hours)Communication, Presentations, and Note-Taking Skills  
    Advisory: ESL A011, concurrent enrollment in either ESL A022 or appropriate placement.
    This course is first in a sequence of listening and speaking courses leading to the English proficiency needed for success in college-level classes by focusing on listening comprehension, oral communication, presentation skills, and pronunciation skills for intermediate ESL students. Students will be introduced to various note-taking strategies, discuss academic lectures, and learn strategies to improve their listening comprehension and oral communication skills. In addition, students will present both in groups and individually. 

    Grammar, Reading and Writing 3   (72 lecture hours; 36 lab hours)  
    Integrates intensive study of grammar, writing, and reading for intermediate students who are non-native speakers of English. Introduction to both literal and critical reading in addition to writing basic responses to unsimplified texts. Writing practice for grammar, mechanics, and fluency.
